Culture

Education and culture are at their best when they go hand in hand – freedom in one breeds freedom in the other.

It’s why I was so delighted to share with Mrs Kent, but more importantly with the musicians, the joy of performance at the recent ‘Lunchtime Live 3’.  And it’s why I’ll be logging on tonight to enjoy the Spring Concert (see below!).

It’s why I was equally thrilled to read that Shakespeare on the Lawn is up and running (something tongue in cheek, methinks, in the choice of ‘Much Ado About Nothing’).

And I continue to marvel at the imagination daily on display in the Art and Design departments. If you seek insight into the inner thoughts of teenagers…

These are some of the many, many reasons why being in School is so much better than being away from it.  We have one more week to enjoy before a well-deserved holiday…. followed by the prospect of (even) more freedom regained on the other side of it.  Oh further joy!  So let’s make the most of it!

It’s also been tough for our OWs still at university, though; and for many of them the opening up remains slower, and in some cases stagnant. But there are opportunities to be found – and to be made – and I urge you to follow up on news from Jamie Saul OW of his latest theatrical venture – read all about it in the OW news section lower down!
Chess Master

Many of you will have enjoyed Anya Taylor-Joy’s portrayal of Beth Harman in The Queen’s Gambit but did you know that we have our very own chess prodigy at Woodbridge School?

George in Year 12 has been making spectacular progress and he only needs one more IM norm to become an International Master.

House Competition Update

The leader board has been updated after week 3.  It has been another big week for Seckford which saw them extend their lead at the top, while Willard is closing in on Burwell in third. A massive 18,500km+ has now been completed by the whole school.

Prize winners of the Y7-9 DT Logo Design Competition also added to totals this week, with Burwell taking the overall honours in this.  Meanwhile teacher "top scorers" last week were: Dr Wharam (261km), Mr Mears (137km), Mr Garvie (130km) & Mr Streat (87km).

And if you’re wondering…as a school we’ve made it to Aachen on the return journey, while Seckford are taking tea in Ulaanbaatar (Улаанбаатар), Mongolia…

HOUSE TOTALS AT THE END OF WEEK 3

Seckford -  6799.85
Annott -     5527.50
Burwell -    3224.21
Willard -     3015.43

Science Club does CREST Awards

CREST is a scheme that inspires young people to think and behave like scientists and engineers, offering students the opportunity to learn through hands-on challenges by exploring the world around them. This week during Science Club we attempted to build 'crafty rafts', an activity which will work towards the students gaining their SuperStar CREST Award.

The young engineers were provided with sellotape, masking tape, staples and just one piece of A4 paper which had to be transformed into raft which could hold marbles without sinking. Cutting the paper was not allowed, so they had to get creative with their folding!

Astonishing results were achieved by one group, whose raft held 99 marbles before sinking! Yes that's one piece of paper, cleverly folded, holding 99 marbles on the surface of the water. The other groups' rafts were less successful, sinking after just 11 and 19 marbles. The competition is now on to improve the rafts next week and beat the this week's record.

Did you know? Rafting was introduced to the Olympic Games in 1972 in Munich.

Mandarin Club
Here are some photos from last week's Mandarin Club. 7C pupils were learning how to make these highly decorative Chinese Lion Buns (top, pics). They used clay to make their excellent creations: not as tasty but equally beautiful!

Antigone

Jamie Saul is making the most of his time at Bristol University, currently applying for his MA in directing while simultaneously setting up his own theatre company, Brave Mirror, and completing his English degree!

Brave Mirror has, in true creative style, embraced this period of remoteness to create a zoom adaption of Antigone. Jamie has adapted and directed this project, released this Friday 19 March at 7.30pm. It will be a Youtube premiere on the website: bravemirror.com/Antigone, and then on demand to watch at your leisure.

Jamie adds…. ‘We have a content warning in place for descriptions of violence, themes of death and suicide, and flashing images in the show, but it should be as suitable as any production of Antigone.’  You have been warned!!

Second hand Uniform shop

If all goes according to the ‘Road Map’, we hope to open the shop for two days during the Easter holidays; Monday March 29 and Wednesday 7 April from 10am to 2pm each day.

We will have cricket togs and summer dresses for sale for under £5 plus other school uniform.
We will also be accepting donations.

We look forward to seeing you soon!
