Science Club does CREST Awards
CREST is a scheme that inspires young people to think and behave like scientists and engineers, offering students the opportunity to learn through hands-on challenges by exploring the world around them. This week during Science Club we attempted to build 'crafty rafts', an activity which will work towards the students gaining their SuperStar CREST Award.
The young engineers were provided with sellotape, masking tape, staples and just one piece of A4 paper which had to be transformed into raft which could hold marbles without sinking. Cutting the paper was not allowed, so they had to get creative with their folding!
Astonishing results were achieved by one group, whose raft held 99 marbles before sinking! Yes that's one piece of paper, cleverly folded, holding 99 marbles on the surface of the water. The other groups' rafts were less successful, sinking after just 11 and 19 marbles. The competition is now on to improve the rafts next week and beat the this week's record.
Did you know? Rafting was introduced to the Olympic Games in 1972 in Munich.
