Online Exams

If an instructor plans to use virtual proctoring to administer a final exam, students should review the information regarding online exams and virtual proctoring. We suggest students are clear on the format of the exam, test their set up, and try a practice quiz a minimum of two weeks prior to the scheduled examination.

Religious Accommodations

For the next three years, Ramadan will fall during the winter examination period. To support students observing Ramadan, there will be limited undergraduate and graduate evening exams scheduled during the April 2021 exam period. Our goal is to limit evening exams, as writing evening exams following a full day of fasting can impact a student’s ability to be successful. If  students observing Ramadan have an evening exam scheduled, students will be able to request religious accommodations as usual.

Will there be evening exams scheduled in future?

December 2021 exams will return to original time slots including evenings, assuming exams will be held on campus at that time. University Scheduling will attempt to avoid scheduling large exams in the evenings next April during Ramadan as much as possible. Students will be able to request religious accommodations as usual.

Conflicts and Overloads

What's a conflict and overload?
Despite best efforts, sometimes there may be a scheduling conflict (two final exams at the same time) or overload situation (three final exams on the same day, or three consecutive exam sessions e.g. afternoon, evening, and next morning, including The Chang School exams). Normally, only scheduled assessments count towards conflicts and overloads. Assignments with flexible time frames do not usually qualify towards conflicts and overloads.

What should students do?
Once the exam schedule is published, students have 2 weeks to notify program departments and schools of conflicts and overloads. If a student contacts you, you can provide the student with this template by copying and pasting the text (not the link) into your email. There are very few conflicts and overloads this semester, so this template is a "soft roll-out" and may be provided more broadly in future.

The program department or school (Chair/Director, Graduate Program Director or Associate Chair of Graduate Programs) is responsible for making alternate arrangements, in consultation with instructors and students. If the conflict is with a Chang School course, program departments or schools should liaise with distance@ryerson.ca to confirm the conflict. If a student has an exam overload, normally the middle exam is deferred.

More information
You can find more information in the Undergraduate Student Guide or Graduate Student Guide or in Policy 135: Final Examination policy. Note, like most Ryerson policies, there is a policy and procedures section. You can find more information in the policy section 3.2, 3.3, 5.4 and the procedures section 4.3.

Missed Exams and the Make-Up Test Centre

For information regarding missed examinations and the Make-Up Test Centre, see the Undergraduate Student Guide or Graduate Student Guide.

An Academic Consideration request for a missed exam may, at the instructor's discretion, result in a make-up assessment. Faculty and students can request remote make-up tests for students without accommodations via the Make Up Test Centre webpage. Please check the Remote Tests tab for more information or contact makeuptestctr@ryerson.ca. Students registered with Academic Accommodation Support (AAS) who need to schedule an accommodated make-up should use AAS.

Trauma Informed Practice
(Various Dates March and April)

Often, we are not equipped with the skills needed to support community members who experienced/are experiencing trauma. This training session provides an overview of trauma-informed practice and the types of trauma, guiding principles, as well as scenarios to work through.

Academic Integrity

The Academic Integrity Office has developed a new way to promote Academic Integrity and Policy 60 education through game play with the new resource: Academic Integrity in Space!

Students go head-to-head with Captain Plague and the League of the Unearned to learn about academic integrity and to earn certificates from the planets Ethica, Originon, and Independus. Produced in collaboration with Digital Education Strategies at The Chang School, the game covers a variety of topics including academic integrity, plagiarism, cheating on tests and exams, unauthorized collaboration, and institutional support services.

Watch the trailer or promote this resource through your communications or social media.
