Steel towers
Canadian Supreme Court rules federal price on carbon as constitutional
In 2018, Prime Minister Trudeau introduced the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, which mandated a standard national price on carbon. Ontario, Alberta, and Saskatchewan pushed back, arguing that the legislation gave Ottawa too much decision-making power, and was therefore unconstitutional.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court ruled the federal price on carbon does not violate the rights of individual provinces in a 6-3 decision.

The Supreme Court called the climate crisis “a threat of the highest order to the country, and indeed the world” that will cause “significant environmental, economic and human harm nationally and internationally, with especially high impacts in the Canadian Arctic, in coastal regions, and on Indigenous Peoples.”

What we saw on Thursday is a cause for celebration! Not only is this the strongest language we've seen on climate change from any court in the world, according to Ecojustice's Josh Ginsberg, but this decision shows a shift in how our government is using policy to unlock markets for impact. It opens up an opportunity to build a market for businesses that are tackling climate change, and sets Canada up to take significant action the climate emergency. We applaud the work of organizers and communities who have worked so hard for so long to advocate for action on climate. Thanks to their resilience and determination, we are able to see decisions like this that give us hope.

ChargeLab raises seed capital to be the software provider powering EV charging infrastructure
This CSI Climate Ventures alumni has come a long way from making phone calls in the stairwells at CSI Spadina! ChargeLab, which provides electric vehicle charging software, has already raised $4.3 million in seed financing. Most recently, they have secured an agreement to be global technology company ABB's default software provider as ABB goes to market with their electric vehicle chargers.

ChargeLab's success is our success — we're honoured to have been part of their journey, and excited to continue celebrating their wins.
