DIVISION OF FINANCE & ADMINISTRATION
From the desk of Chris Kinsley
March 18, 2021

LOOKING BACK . . .

This week marks my one-year anniversary with New College. I am grateful to President O'Shea for allowing me to serve as CFO and VP of Finance & Administration. My excitement when I received that late-night call a year ago has not diminished. The spirit of innovation is alive and well at New College, and there is an openness to new ideas and a truly remarkable passion amongst faculty, staff and students for making New College even better. This amazing combination makes each day a fulfilling challenge. Thank you to the New College Community for making me feel welcome, and I look forward to Year Two!

STUDENT SYMPTOM TRACKER

I hope you are all getting into the habit of using your Student Symptom Tracker app. Lex Daly, Eliza Ledbetter, and Galen Rydzik were recently chosen randomly from a pool of students who had been using the tracker. As a result, they were given their choice of prizes from the "CFO Swag Box." This week, we will be holding another drawing. Complete the Student Symptom Tracker between Monday, March 22 - Friday, March 26 to qualify. Remember, you should use the tracker even if you aren't planning to come to campus. Winners will be drawn on Monday, March 29. Just as an FYI, the CFO Swag Box has grown considerably since the last prizes were selected!

NCF CUSTOMER SERVICE TRAINING

Improving communications between students and administrators has been shown to have a lasting impact on students' overall college experience. In an effort to do so, NCF Human Resources is launching a brand-new customer experience training program, "It's Not Just About Service Anymore." This is a highly engaging, 2.5 hour program that will be offered:

If you would like to attend, please register by Tuesday, March 23. You can register by clicking on the date/time above that you would like to attend.

EAT at HAM Cafe and Receive a Free NCF Sportspack

The first 50 people who buy a meal from HAM Cafe anytime Friday, March 19, will receive a free NCF sportspack. Claim your sportspack when you check out at the register. This is your opportunity to use your HAM Points and try out their new menu items.

FACILITIES SERVICES

I am pleased to announce the promotion of Alan Burr from Director to Assistant Vice President of Facilities Management. A large group of critical functions report up to Alan, including Facilities Planning and Physical Plant. Additionally, Mailroom Services and Environmental Health & Safety/Emergency Management will now report to Alan. Looking below, you will see that Facilities Services, and all related areas, have been extremely busy.

COOK HALL RENOVATION

If you've ever been to Cook Hall, you probably noticed that our furnishings were looking outdated and worn. When Facilities began water damage repair and mitigation for Cook Hall, we saw this as the perfect opportunity to refurbish and vitalize this beautiful area. Patricia Vandenburg, a former educator, theater wardrobe designer, and interior designer agreed to help us. Patricia searched area thrift shops and consignment shops for period pieces that would "fit" in Cook Hall, but would also enliven it. In some cases, it was simply a matter of bring in pieces from other buildings such as College Hall or Caples. The results were astonishing. If you haven't been by, please do so. In addition to refurbishing the President's Dining Room and Cook Hall Living Room, a nook in the living room was converted into a small library area where you may sit and read a book. Books in this area were written by staff, alumni or students, and we hope to continue to grow it in the future. Feel free to use the Living Room to study or just to relax and look out over beautiful Sarasota Bay. Looking below, in the "Before" shots followed by the "After" shots, see for yourself the remarkable transformation.

The Jane Bancroft Cook Library is one of the busiest places on campus, and is normally a hub of activity. The restrooms there were long overdue for a refresh. The new "touchless" facilities are not only attractive, but designed to use technology solutions to improve hygiene and sanitation. The bathrooms are now open. Flush until your heart's content. See the BEFORE and AFTER below.

The Amphitheater behind the Pritzker Resident Hall is a "hidden gem." The Grounds Department has added plantings of indigenous, drought tolerant "Coontie palms" (actually a palm-like cyad) to create a strong boundary, and to address erosion issues at the top of the berm. This solution will be relatively easy for Grounds to maintain, and avoids potential safety issues of mowing at the crest of a steep slope. This planting is part of a larger effort to create a "Green" barrier/boundary between the NCF campus and US 41.
