Dear Centennial Families,

I’m having a hard time writing Crew News about a second mass shooting in less than a week, in addition to processing grief and other emotions. I imagine some of you might be in the same boat. Please take care of yourselves, and each other. Making time to be together, hear each other, and have space to process and heal helps us get through hard times, together. Please consult some of the attached resources if you’d like support in having these conversations with your kids. In addition, here are some resources to show support for the AAPI Community, speak out if you are witnessing or experiencing a hate crime, and talk to your kids about racially-motivated violence as well:

Shifting gears to school news, seeing your kids in costume for spirit week this week brought some much-needed levity this last week before spring break. Thanks for helping them come up with creative ways to celebrate our student-leadership led Spirit Week! In addition, we hope to finalize our bell times and school calendar later in April. For now, know that we will not start school earlier than 8/23, but will provide a full calendar as soon as we can!

Speaking of calendars, we have a draft of our CMAS schedule. It is possible we will have some changes, but this is our schedule as of now. For 100% virtual students who are coming into the building to test, we are planning to have students arrive at 8:45am and be picked up at 11:15. We will send out confirmation once we get closer.

Have a safe, fun, and relaxing spring break. We will miss seeing the kids, and look forward to coming back together soon!

Updates from the Science Lab!

Please support our Trout in the Classroom program. Miss Michelle is currently working with Trout Unlimited to start a Trout in the Classroom program.  This is a conservation-oriented and environmental education program I’d like to develop with our young learners.  We will raise trout from eggs in a tank here at Centennial, with the goal to release the trout into local water each spring. I’m envisioning a Release Day party where students, families, and community members can come together to celebrate the release of our trout into local waters. The Trout in the Classroom program will be a wonderful opportunity for my students to engage in community-based learning by learning how to care for local animals, appreciate water as a habitat and resource, and connect with ecosystems.  The start-up costs are around $2000, which cover equipment and technology to ensure the health of the trout.  I’m asking local businesses for donations of any amount to help support the set-up of this program.
Can you recommend a local business who may want to donate money to our program? If so, please reach out to Miss Michelle with suggestions: michelle_morton@dpsk12.org. Also, be on the lookout for upcoming Centennial Dine Out evenings to raise money for the Trout in the Classroom program. If you are interested in connecting with Miss Michelle on this project (making a donation, volunteer with tank care, etc) please reach out to her directly.

Volunteer at Berkeley Lake! Miss Miss Michelle in the Science Lab is requesting parent volunteers this spring to accompany crews to Berkeley Lake for fieldwork. We will meet at 12:30 on the west (big kids) playground.  Please make sure you wear walking shoes, sunscreen, and layers you don't mind getting a bit wet/muddy. We will wrap up by 1:30/1:45.  Miss Michelle teaches another class at Centennial at 1:30, so she may need your help bringing some materials back to school in a rolling wagon while she hurries back to Centennial. There are no bathrooms near where we will be at the lake and we are not allowed any visitors in Centennial, so please be prepared for no bathroom opportunities. You MUST remain masked the entire time and we will need to keep physical distance for safety. You do not have to have a child in the crew slot that works for your schedule so just sign up using the attached Sign Up Genius and get ready for some wonderful water fun! All volunteers must complete the DPS online volunteer background check and email our volunteer coordinator at lauriehanselmann@gmail.com when completed.  Sign up Genius: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0D4DABA929A5FE3-berkeley

Science = community.   As scientists, it's essential that we learn from each other in our Centennial crew and the greater science community.  Please check out the Community page of my science lab website to see how we are connecting as a community. A big thank you to Mr. Carlos for showing the Centennial generator to the 4th and 5th graders as part of our energy conversions expedition. https://sites.google.com/dpsk12.net/centennialsciencelab/community?authuser=0

Spring Break March 29 - April 5

Friday, March 26, 2021 is International #SELday (Social Emotional Learning)

– a day centered around celebrating the importance of social-emotional learning and elevating the need for more social-emotional health programming to help combat the mental health crisis impacting our youth. This year’s theme, “Building Bonds, Building Communities,” reminds us that together we are stronger. Whether at home or in the classroom, we all have a role to play in investing in our children’s social-emotional health.

Take action for #SELday by:

  • Creating space to practice and model mindful awareness practices to help children (and ourselves) reflect on what is happening within the context of our body and in the environment that surrounds us, and inform how we react or interact with others or alone in various situations.
  • Strengthening family-school partnerships through social-emotional learning initiatives at school and at home that support experiential learning, creative expression and unstructured play. (Spanish version
  • Celebrating international #SELday with AFHK! Join us 6:00pm CST on Friday, March 26, 2021. Join as a family– we’re creating space to care for the “SELf” – together!
    • Instagram LIVE: 6:00pm CST – Join Ashley Green, Senior Program Manager of Social-Emotional Health at Action for Healthy Kids and certified yoga teacher, for a reflective wellness break to wind-down from our day and prepare for a new one.

We invite any of our participants to join us for a fun day of golf. We will have a skills competition including: closest to the pin, closest to the line, bulls-eye putting, and bulls-eye chipping. Your scores will be measured against the other golfers in your division. Trophies and gift cards will be awarded to the top 3 placers in each division. Girls and Boys will compete in the same age division.
Please arrive only 10 minutes before your scheduled start time. This will help our staff control the number of golfers we have on the property at any given time.
We suggest using your own golf clubs for the skills challenge. If you do not have clubs, we will have a small contingent of clubs on hand. These clubs will be cleaned and sanitized after each use. All staff, participants, and guests must wear face coverings.
Parents and other guests will not be able to travel with groups as they compete. We must continue to limit our group sizes to adhere to our Covid-19 policies. We are sorry in advance for any inconvenience. The restaurant is open and will be serving during competition.
