Effective March 3rd, our new organization’s name San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance (SDZWA) replaces the previous San Diego Zoo Global name. This change was inspired by our desire to evolve and focus on how we show up in our conservation mission, with our partners, and allies, around the globe; and how we bring our guests into our mission at our two front doors, at the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park.

The health of wildlife, people, and ecosystems are interconnected.  And it’s essential for us to reflect this in everything we do.  The need to create allies for wildlife is more crucial than ever before. The next chapter in our organization’s 105-year journey begins now as we work to create a world where all life thrives.

Sunburst Diving Beetle Fact Sheet

We're excited to share our first invertebrate fact sheet with you! Zoos commonly bring attention to animals with fur, feathers, or scales, but the future opening of SDZWA's new Sanford Children's Zoo will highlight the conservation needs of insects and arthropods, as well. This year, we look forward to sharing fact sheet research on several spineless wonders, including the coconut crab, Lord Howe Island stick insect, and the sunburst diving beetle.

If you've never crossed paths with this small but mighty aquatic insect, you're in for a treat. Sunburst diving beetles propel themselves through the water using powerful hind legs, while breathing from an air bubble to remain submerged. They defense themselves from predators using a combination of coloration and milky chemical irritants. And despite their tiny size, sunburst diving beetle larvae are voracious hunters, with some of the most structurally complex eyes in the animal kingdom. (Would you believe 25+ retinas?)

These streamlined, beautifully colored underwater acrobats are sure to stir many a child's imagination in the San Diego Zoo's future insect house!
