April is Alcohol Awareness Month. This month holds a special place in my heart as I am someone who once struggled with alcohol. Alcohol Awareness Month was developed to increase awareness and understanding of the causes and treatment of one of our nation’s top public health problems: alcoholism.

Alcohol is the third leading cause of preventable death in America, with approximately 95,000 deaths per year from alcohol-related causes.1 Over 80% of people age 12 and older have reported alcohol use during their lifetime.2 Alcohol impacts households all across America. I feel very strongly that we must continue to increase outreach and education regarding alcoholism and other alcohol-related issues, especially with our youth.

Denial seems to be a common trait among those who suffer with alcoholism. I would like to challenge the minds of those who read this. Is alcohol knit too tightly into the fabric of Wisconsin’s leisure and entertainment industries? Are we all doing our part to tear down the stigma surrounding alcoholism? What emotions stir inside of you when I ask you these questions? Addiction impacts most of us either directly or indirectly and now is the time to act. Now is the time to get involved in raising awareness. Wisconsin Voices for Recovery is here to help engage these discussions.

This podcast will focus on interviewing members of the community, both locally and nationally, who are in recovery from substance use disorders and those that support a loved one in recovery or active addiction. This month's podcast guest was Aaron Gabriel, Founder and President of the nationally recognized Rebalanced-Life Wellness Association. Their mission is ensuring that Black men and boys living in under-represented communities have the opportunities to live fuller, and healthier lives.

Anyone, regardless of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity, can support lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQ) people. Deepening your understanding of LGBTQ-related issues, including basic terms and concepts, can help you support LGBTQ-identified people.
