Effective Grant Writing is a Superpower!
Fundraising & Fund Development  •••  Principle of the month
Fundraising & Fund Development. Nonprofit organizations provide opportunities for individuals and institutions to voluntarily contribute to causes of their choosing. By engaging the interests and relationships of individuals, nonprofits can help develop a culture of philanthropy where people feel their values can be expressed and contributions effectively used to improve their communities. To honor this trust, nonprofits should be good stewards and conduct their fundraising according to the highest ethical standards with regard to solicitation, acceptance, recording, reporting and use of funds. Nonprofits should adopt clear policies for fundraising activities to ensure responsible use of funds and open, transparent communication with contributors and other constituents.  Read more.

Get that Grant! Series with Susannah Erler
It is one of the biggest ‘grant writing secrets’: your chances of obtaining funding increase significantly when you find the right funder to ask.

So, what is the top strategy for finding the right funder?
Here is a crucial tip: the strategy is to find the possible funder who is the most probable funder. Remember – probability is key.

Don’t just send in an application because you have heard an organization has a lot of funds in their coffers. Look for a funder whose mission aligns with your nonprofit’s. Look for a funder who supports the geographic area that you serve. When you look for these and other elements – your grant funding probability increases.

Jack Smith - Featured Alumni & Faculty
“My life is my hobby,” says Jack Smith, a stoic New Englander hailing from Maine, whose no-nonsense approach and guidance consistently helps Certificate participants to obtain significant grants for their organizations.

Jack has led our Center’s Certificate in Grant Writing for the past 12 years, through 28 classes resulting in over 480 alumni.  It is a part of his 30 years of teaching his grant course. Why? Because, as Jack said, “Because I believe so strongly in what my students can collectively accomplish in bettering the world. That is my legacy, and it motivates me.”

What makes him effective? “I think it is my ability to use the combination of information and intuition together to choose a path. I look back at significant junctures in my life that reflect that - coping with personal obstacles, career moves, life in general.”

Jack shares his expertise throughout the United States and internationally. He led advanced grant writing programs for African public health officials in South Africa and Ethiopia. He leads grant writing certificate programs at the University of North Florida, Western Carolina University, and the University of Maine – in addition to his work with Nonprofit Austin.

“Nonprofit Austin is one of the best places in the country to continue my mission, so partnering with them has been an excellent choice. I like that the course is affordable and offered to a diverse swath of students - with the potential to garner the most effective grants, locally and globally,” Jack highlighted.

Jack holds a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Maine. His housing development work received a national citation from the US Department of Energy. His pragmatic approach is grounded by his senior management experience with large multi-program nonprofits and consulting for national consulting firms.

Equaling and exceeding all his formal credentials is his warmth, his passion, and his commitment to grant writing excellence. For him, the process is about garnering the resources necessary to effect change and improving the quality of services that leads to a better quality of life. As he notes, “If I have a pet peeve it is social injustice.”

His commitment to every certificate participant is reflected in the individual counseling he offers as part of their quality learning experience.

We are grateful he is among Nonprofit Austin’s distinguished faculty.

Join Jack for his next Certificate class!
