Walking together - Sunday 25th April -2pm

We are hoping to meet for a walk near Risby ( HU17 8SS)

- dogs and children are welcome...

This circular walk explores the deserted village of Risby in East Riding of Yorkshire. Risby Park includes lakes, woodland and some lovely views of the surrounding countryside.

The walk is just under 3 miles and includes some short climbs. In the park you can see information boards about the history of the park. The foundations of Risby Hall can still be seen today in the fields near Risby. It was the home of the Ellerker family between the early 14th and the late 18th centuries but destroyed by fire in the 1780s.

Start the walk from the Folly Lane Cafe where there is ample parking. You then pick up the footpaths heading west toward the medieval village, along Dunflat Road. A footpath then heads north past the site of the village before picking up another path to take you east past some pockets of woodland. You then turn south past Low Daw Hill and Folly Wood. Shortly after you return to the car park and the finish point.

After your walk you can enjoy refreshments from the lovely Folly Lane Cafe.

Covid-secure Group walks are classified by the UK government as ‘organised physical activities’ and can take place.

YOU NEED TO BOOK SO WE CAN KEEP PEOPLE SAFE AND WE CAN BRIEF YOU BEFORE THE WALK - stmarys.beverley@gmail.com

Introducing Jill and John

I am from Kent originally by arrived in Leicestershire aged seven following several job moves for my father. John was born and grew up in Hull but left the area to go to university in 1977. We met at work in Leicester Magistrates Court in early 1984 – he a Solicitor and me a Court Clerk’s Assistant. We share a love of sport; John having been a county level footballer and a good golfer; I played county and midlands hockey. John continues to torture himself over the football season by supporting Hull City!
We married in 1986 and have been blessed with four wonderful children. Watching them grow and encouraging their talents has been one of the most amazing pleasures of our lives. We are now also very proud grandparents to four, and Godparents to our three nieces. The worst part of the last year has been not being able to see them and our extended family.

John was confirmed as a teenager alongside his mother at St Cuthbert’s on Marlborough Avenue in Hull. He has always had a strong faith and it was he who encouraged me to confirmation whilst pregnant with our second child. I come from a non-church going family but had always felt an immense draw to the church that I didn’t really understand following a school carol service at the age of six.

While our children were young church attendance was difficult. Those were the days when churches were not often welcoming to young families, especially if you lived in a small village with an elderly congregation as we did. It is such a joy to see how families and children are welcomed and encouraged at St. Marys.

Our faith found a safe home in the Ironstone Benefice in Leicestershire where I served as churchwarden for nearly seven years and, after a serious heart issue, John admitted the calling he had felt for so long and commenced his Reader Training at Leicester Cathedral in 2018. However, as a true Yorkshire man I always knew our destiny would be for John to come home. In 2019, with our children spread around the country and one usually in a different country, the time was right to start our search for a new home.

A home was found which would be perfect for entertaining the ever-growing family who all love the area, our friends and wider family and the new friends we hoped to make here – life was going to be busy! Illness again struck, this time a serious heart problem for me which almost scuppered our plans, but in November 2019 we finally moved into our new home and started to take advantage of all the benefits of living in this beautiful town. Who would have thought then that we would experience what has followed!

We have been so incredibly lucky for John to be able to move his training to the York Diocese, and St Marys and for me to be offered the opportunity to become churchwarden. John is hoping to be licensed as a Reader later this year.

The welcome we have received in this community has been tremendous. The pandemic has changed every aspect of all of our lives but we have tried to remain positive and we have learned some new skills on the way – who knew we could film church services on our phones and that people would watch them or that it was possible to make a seriously good alternative nativity film in a matter of a few weeks! We have met so many lovely and interesting people and cannot wait for life to open up a bit more so we can get to know more of you.

Poem - Lockdown Good Friday
There is a quiet today
Like no other quiet
A silence so profound
That halts my thoughts

It is telling me to stop
I see the Cross
With Jesus hanging there
So dead
So gone away
From us

There is a tension
So much shame for what we did
But in that shame,
A conflicting joy
Of life transformed
Oh, Jesus
You died for us
Today

To change our life
Our way of being
ou have opened vistas
So vast
So hard to comprehend

Your wisdom so profound
To forgive others
As we forgive ourselves
Beckons us to a world
We can barely see
Your Kingdom Waiting for us to explore
Beyond our Lockdown vision

A vision of life
Which becomes so small
So fragile
So insecure
We have lost those props of life
You gave us
All those things we have come to love
That support us in our lives
We take them all for granted
But lockdown comes
And takes them all away
Our life has gone
Lockdown Good Friday

Jesus, You rose again
You fulfilled your Father’s mission
You gave us sight of a brand-new world
Of hope
Of love
A vaccine for a life anew
Beyond the fear of Covid
Inspired by You
This Good Friday

Prayers
Wednesday 14th April - Friday 23rd April 2021
(broadcast each evening on Facebook)

A simple form of evening prayer and candle lighting *

At St Mary's we would like to invite you to join us in a short time of prayer every day at 7pm. It involves lighting a candle and placing it in the window and then saying the following prayers as individuals or as households.  You can join with others in these prayers on our Facebook page.

The Lord almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end. Amen.

Our help is in the name of the Lord
who made heaven and earth.

A period of silence for reflection on the past day may follow.

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

The reading for the day (see below)**

The candle is lit and the following prayer is said
Heavenly Father, accept this burning candle as a sign of faith and love.
Like this candle, bring light into our world
Even as this candle is lit may we know your presence
and be consumed in the warmth of your love.
In your mercy, Lord hear our prayer.

In peace we will lie down and sleep;
for you alone, Lord, make us dwell in safety.

Abide with us, Lord Jesus
for the night is at hand and the day is now past.

As the night watch looks for the morning
so do we look for you, O Christ.

The Lord bless us and watch over us;
the Lord make his face shine upon us and be gracious to us;
the Lord look kindly on us and give us peace. Amen.
