Traditional Canadian real estate companies should be concerned about Zillow and other new proptech companies that are capable of disrupting the traditional business model. Disruption will take place as the new companies take advantage of data and technology to streamline the real estate transaction process, while driving down costs and providing more relevant services to consumers.

Letters: I am a very annoyed Realtor

I thought I’d take this opportunity to state my grievances about our current real estate industry.

I’ve read some of the REM articles and felt compelled to send this to you. I have forwarded my ideas to CREA, OREA and to the real estate brokers and business ministry, whenever there is an invite to “give us your feedback” but I never ever hear anything back. So I’m picking on you. 

Lately I have read some your articles regarding our current market and of course how unfair it is to buyers. I felt even REM misses the point.

Is remote work the future of the real estate industry?

We speak with hundreds of candidates regularly, and our newest and most popular question is: “Can I work from home?” Currently, the answer is more often than not: no. So why is the real estate industry still stuck in the past? We see so much talent fall through during the hiring process because of their desire to work from home. Especially with admin positions, is the industry adaptable to work from home? We think so.

A story about door knocking

It works in every industry. Someone has to get the ball rolling. Connect with someone with whom you can sell your product. Be it a service or a widget, you need to get the proverbial phone to ring. Advertising in its many shapes and form help, but there’s nothing like a face-to- face with a prospective final end user for what you have to offer.  Here’s a story about my door knocking experience, from long before the pandemic, and how it shaped my real estate career.

Realtor David Weir develops six-plex for seniors

During my 25-year real estate career in the Belleville/Trenton area, I found an increasing need for a style of accommodation that allows seniors to transition from a single-family home to a more ‘carefree’ lifestyle without having to go into an apartment or a retirement residence. With this in mind, I started to consider a solution for these clients who could not find this type of “transition” accommodation. With the assistance of a local engineer, great city staff, local builders and tradespeople, we came up with a plan for six large one-bedroom units.
