A Letter to my Son: Advice for You (and Me)

It's the eve of a big day.

Tomorrow you'll compete against 20 other competitors for one elite spot. To prepare for your interview we talked today about your unique strengths, and what you'll bring to the team. We thought logically about the pieces of the puzzle that you need to put together.
After that, I told you what I didn't want you to know.

Let them see your heart.

That's how they will really get to know YOU, who you are and what you're truly capable of.
And it's the last thing that I want you to do. Because it makes you vulnerable. More vulnerable than the guy who lives by logic alone and protects himself from the hurt. When you show someone your heart it leaves it open to having it broken.

It's the biggest risk. It's the most challenging thing to do.

And, it's worth it.
Every. Time.

Because you'll know that you gave them all of you. No matter the outcome you'll know you put it all on the line. Then surrender to what comes next. Trust that the path which opens up for you is your path.

Your heart will be there to light the way forward.

In other words...

"Vulnerability is not winning or losing;
It's having the courage to show up and be seen when we have
no control over the outcome. Vulnerability is not weakness;
it's our greatest measure of courage."
- Brené Brown

"If you risk nothing, then you risk everything." - Geena Davis

A good question...

What's the best advice I've received?
