Taking on New Opportunities while Being Faithful to Existing Ones

Teaching Online
While Peru continues its prohibition of large in-person gatherings, the Lord continues to provide new opportunities while allowing me to be faithful to build on existing ones. One new opportunity that came my way recently was an invitation to teach at a seminary, Seminario Evangelico de los Andes (Evangelical Seminary of the Andes), in the city of Ayacucho which is another city in the Andes about 12 hours from Cusco. The seminary is holding all of its courses online and invited me to teach a hermeneutics class (how to interpret the Bible) this semester. This has been a new experience that is allowing me to impact current and future ministry leaders in another part of Peru.

Training Young Leaders
Darwin and I also just finished a four week class on how to interpret and teach the Bible with a group of 10 young adult leaders from a local denomination. Ethan was a big help in assisting each week. They were a sharp group with a bright future of influencing and leading their denomination. They have asked to enter the full three year Bible institute next. Darwin and I are hoping to not only have them but a larger group of young leaders from that denomination in order to see how the Lord might use them to strengthen and grow it going forward.

Widows Ministry
Our church here has a vibrant widows ministry that enrolls 30 women from a Quechua community outside the city as well as another city in the jungle. Outside of our financial giving, our family has recently begun helping to shop for the food and prepare the baskets of basic necessities that our church provides for them twice per month. The women also gather to study the Bible and some have even given their lives to Christ. Ethan, Titus, and Nora earn and save money each month which is used to support one particular widow that was not previously enrolled in the program. This ministry is part of a larger church planting effort our church is engaging in that community. We are thrilled to have the privilege to help in these small ways.

Training Teachers
We continue to train our group of national brothers to teach alongside me and Darwin in the Bible institute. The group is advancing well and will soon be ready to begin teaching new groups of pastors and leaders.

I also continue to teach some and serve in leadership in the church. Our radio ministry is now playing in various cities in Peru, and on some Spanish radio stations in Canada and the northeast US.

Family Update

Things in Cusco continue to go back and forth between lockdowns and opening up a little bit. Sundays are currently a full lockdown with churches continuing to be closed and people not allowed to leave their houses. Beyond that, Easter weekend (Thursday-Sunday) was also a full quarantine which made the holiday particularly difficult and lonely. However, we were able to celebrate with our friends, the Torres family, that following Monday. The time and fellowship with them was fun and refreshing. Given the problems in vaccine distribution and lack of availability here it looks as though Peru may continue in this pattern for the remainder of 2021.

On a more positive note, the kids are finishing up their school year with Betsy and Ethan is cruising along in his theological studies. Titus and Nora both celebrated birthdays in March. Titus turned 12 and Nora turned 9! Next week, Betsy and her good friend Annie will be traveling to a retreat for missionary women/wives for some much needed refreshment. We are also in the midst of preparing for our furlough which begins in June (Lord willing). We are really looking forward to reporting what the Lord has done as well as spending time with family and friends.
Praises
  • The Lord continues to provide good opportunities for deep and widespread ministry impact.
  • For the friendship of the Torres family.
  • Titus and Nora celebrating another year of life and, more importantly, life in Christ.
Prayer Requests
  • That all the logistics for travel will go well for Betsy and Annie and that they get great refreshment on their retreat.
  • That the new teachers in the Bible Institute will continue to grow in their love for Jesus and their gift to teach His people.
  • For an ever-growing love for Jesus within our family.
  • First round of national elections in Peru on Sunday. The top two winners for president will participate in a runoff soon thereafter.
