Newtown Festival is almost here - on Sunday April 11th

Fingers crossed for a covid-free week, and good weather on the 11th!

Most of the performers you were looking forward to seeing in March will still be at the Festival on Sunday. The programme starts with a Whakatau at the Tangata Whenua Stage outside Newtown School at 9.30 am, and continues till the last act on the Wilson St Stage finishes at 8.30 pm - and then there are after parties at cafés & bars.

Explore all the Festival attractions at http://www.newtownfestival.org.nz

As well as the brilliant line up of performances there are many other activities to enjoy at the Festival! Its a day for all the family. Look for the Circus Performances and Workshops in Gordon Place, the Street Sports in Donald McLean St and other free activities in Arney St, including  a bouncy castle, ferris wheel, roundabout and Wishbone Balance Bike Rides for littlies, and games for all ages with the Wellington Entertainment Company.

At the other end of the Festival site check out the Filipino Village in the grounds of St Annes (access from Emmett St or Green St) which is run by the Filipino Parishioners of the South Wellington Catholic Parish - you will find a range of stalls and a fairground with more carnival rides.

And don't forget the huge array of market stalls - wonderful international food, crafts, fashion, community information of all sorts! In a day or two the full list of stalls will be published on the Festival website, so look out for it and have a browse of what you want to target on the day!
Newtown Hall - the new mural is finished!

Newtown artist Kerb has created a wonderful new mural on the wall of the Newtown Community Hall on Daniell Street (where we have our meetings). A video has been shot of Kerb and Spex (aka Andrew Tamati Wright and Sara Tamati) creating this work, including interviews about Newtown with some other locals, and we're really looking forward to seeing it sometime soon!

WCC Proposals for Time Limits in Carparks.

Wellington City Council are asking for feed back on some changes in local carparks – Newtown Park, Hanson St and Alexandra Road. In all three there are proposals for establishing mobility parking spaces and time limited parking, with the intention of supporting short term parking over long term commuter parking spaces and improving accessibility to the Zoo, parks and sports fields.

Consultation closes 5pm, Friday 16 April 2021.

These are the detailed proposals –

7 April 2021

The GWRC Long Term Plan looks at all the big issues and how to tackle them. As a starting point, there are four strategic priorities, or guiding lights, to focus on:

  • Responding to the climate emergency. Urgent action is needed now and we have set a big, bold target to be carbon neutral by 2030 and climate positive by 2035
  • Improving outcomes for mana whenua and Māori. We are strengthening our commitment to working closely with mana whenua to achieve the best outcomes for Māori and the region, across everything we do
  • Adapting and responding to the impacts of COVID-19. We plan to lead the way in supporting our region through the COVID-19 recovery, transitioning along the way to a sustainable, low carbon economy
  • Aligning with Government direction. The Government’s setting some big environmental goals. Some are still evolving, and several align with what we’re doing already. We plan to be in the best position to respond well.
