Here we are in April!

I cannot believe we are only a few short weeks from leaves on trees and green grass. This year has certainly been a challenge for all of us in so many ways and I know we could all use a relaxing day outside without a coat on.

With April, comes our Annual Meeting. We will be voting on next year's Slate of Officers as well as some budget changes.  Please plan on attending our Zoom meeting on April 13th. If you cannot attend, then you should access our absentee ballot HERE.
We will also be sharing more information about the League Year Awards and what you can do to nominate one of your fellow members!  Oh and we will be welcoming our new members as Active members.

Also, please note that we will have a May Zoom meeting - we need to vote on a finalized budget and give out awards.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone next week!

Yours in Volunteering,

Becky

FEATURED MEMBER: AGNES KUO

Why did you join the JLCV?

I wanted to join Junior League because I wanted to volunteer and make a difference in my community while also having fun.

What's your favorite part of being in the league?

My favorite part of being in the league are the ladies.  They have been very welcoming, passionate about what our community needs and strive to help in any way we can.

What are some other activities you do outside the League?

I have a 17 month old and she keeps me pretty active outside the League.  I also love skiing, arts and crafts and traveling (when we can again).

What brought you to Vermont?

I grew up in South Burlington, attended UVM and never left.  It’s a great place to be and raise a family.  There are so many activities to do for every season.

What’s your go-to restaurant (dine-in or take out)?

There are so many great restaurants in this area, but if I had to choose one it has be Pho Hong.

What are you passionate about?

I’m passionate about photography. I love capturing memories and printing them out.  When I revisit the photos, I always give myself the biggest smile and/or laugh.

RISING STAR & OUTSTANDING MEMBER AWARDS

Please nominate your fellow JLCV Members! We will be selecting a Rising Star and Outstanding Member for 2020-2021. Nominations are due by April 27. The Board will be voting and selecting the awards recipients based on your nomination. Stay tuned for more information about the awards, what each entails, how to vote, and where to submit the form.

DELAY OF FY 22 BUDGET VOTE

The FY 22 draft budget remains under development and will not be voted on at the April GMM. This will now require a May GMM vote. The reason for this delay is twofold - 1) the diaper bank has outgrown its current physical space and we are in the process of negotiating a new (larger) lease, potentially within our current building, and would like to accurately reflect facilities expenses in the budget, and 2) the Vermont Legislature is poised to approve an additional $82,000 of funding for diaper bank operations, and we are awaiting detail on spending parameters to better inform our budget.

DIAPER BANK EXPENSE APPROVAL

A vote to ratify two Diaper Bank expenses will be held at the April GMM. Both expenses are being covered by funds raised during Giving Tuesday.

  • Transportation of 28 Pallet Donation from Canada - $1,396
  • Purchase of Pull Ups to Supplement Inventory - $6,727.08

***If you will not be participating in the April GMM, please submit your vote by email to info@jlcv.org prior to the meeting.

FY 22 MEMBER DUES - NEW PROCESS
Along with AJLI, we are in the process of building out the member dues functionality on our upgraded website. Use of the website, rather than invoicing through Quickbooks, should make dues collection much easier for everyone. In addition to keeping membership dues flat for FY 22 at $135 across all membership levels - sustainer, senior active, active, and provisional - we will again be offering a variety of payment plan options. Dues notices and payment instructions will be forthcoming in the May newsletter.

DIAPER BANK UPDATE

An incredible month in (and out of!) the Diaper Bank! We hope you have seen some of the great press that Sarah Aceves has facilitated – including THIS ONE. Thank you to Charity Clark as well, for drafting the press release.

As noted, Dee PT’s Jason Fitzgerald was behind this Seventh Generation donation, and he also had “left” some 50,000 Seventh Gen. diapers in the Bank, which we had been storing for him since last fall. His drives have been to benefit COTS, but they are well-stocked. See the article for the incredible statistics on incoming and outgoing diapers, and on diaper need. And photos which show how insanely full the Bank is right now, plus now 22 pallets in an unused storefront in the University Mall. A shout-out to Target for loaning two pallet jacks to help with that process, and to ECI Inc. for their forklift assistance.

Delivery day on March 26 was wild – coupled with diapers’ worst enemy: Rain. A huge truck from Toronto maneuvered to a delivery position at a far corner of the UMall before it opened for business, and Amanda, Sarah Lenes and Jason swiftly unloaded and hauled 12 heavy tall pallets through the Mall (They join 10 pallets from an earlier delivery). The truck then made it around to our location, and a forklift and kind operator from the airport worked feverishly with Sarah (Lenes) and Amanda to unload 16 additional pallets before the rains. Larissa Woods heeded the emergency call to help with the unloading – and Sarah had taken the day off work, lending invaluable support.

We have already distributed 227,402 diapers so far this year, with upcoming distributions on April 6th in South Burlington, and on April 12th to southern Vermont.

It was a terrific month for funding as well: Amanda’s and Jessica’s grant request to the Hoehl Foundation netted $37,500 for the purchase of more diapers. A Bill working its way through the VT Legislature is expected to grant us another $82,000 in CARES (Covid Relief) support. We're excited by the infusion of money as it will give us some breathing room to reflect on the future of the diaper bank and begin a planning process about that future.

Upcoming repackaging dates are noted on the website, and our newest members are busy with diaper drives of their own. Thank you all!

Thanks everyone,

MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO HELP
Check out the LOADS of diapers from the last donation HERE! The diaper bank is bursting at the seams. Please come to a diaper repackaging, diaper donation pull, or diaper distribution. April 6th, 12th, and 29th. Also, keep an eye on Facebook for additional volunteer opportunities at the diaper bank.

As the JLCV year winds down, the other major community project is the Ronald McDonald House Room redecoration. We are currently soliciting donations and this project will run into or through the summer. After taking a look at the other rooms, we are excited to make this one cozy and ready to comfort a family. If anyone wants to join the team to help with soliciting donations and planning the decoration scheme, please email Karen Spach, and come to the next meeting.
Thank you,
