Maddening itch of liver disease comes from a surprising source
A devastating itching of the skin driven by severe liver disease turns out to have a surprising cause. Its discovery points toward possible new therapies for itching, and shows that the outer layer of the skin  much more than insulation. The finding, which appears  in Gastroenterology, indicates that the keratinocyte cells are acting as what Wolfgang Liedtke, MD PhD, calls "pre-neurons." Read more.
A patient's and doctor's perspective on narrative medicine
When asked about the process of writing her memoir, Dana Lorene Creighton paused in thought.“It’s like spilling your guts to a lined composition notebook,” she said. On Tuesday, March 30th, Creighton was joined by Sneha Mantri, MD, MS, her neurologist at Duke and director of the Trent Center’s Program in Medical Humanities, for Narrative Medicine: A Patient’s Perspective – a conversation about the impact of narrative medicine and the journey to her memoir, A Family Disease: A Memoir of Multigenerational Ataxia. Dunn, Abella, Hobgood and Liu receive Duke Neurology All-Star Awards
Four members of the Duke Neurology Department received All-Star Awards this March for their commitment to patient care, helping their colleagues, and mentoring the next generations of neurologists. March's winners include Cindy Dunn, PA-C, Irene Abella, APRN, NP-C, Julie Hobgood, and Andy Liu, MD, MS. Duke Neurology All Star Awards recognize faculty, staff, trainees, and students from across our Department who go above and beyond the call of duty in their commitment to excellent patient care, research, and education. Koltai, Somarelli receive inaugural Bass Connections Leadership Award
Deborah Koltai, PhD, and Jason Somarelli, PhD (Assistant Professor in Medicine, School of Medicine) are the winners of the 2021 Bass Connections Leadership Award. This new award recognizes outstanding team leaders for their efforts to create a positive and enriching team experience for students. This Week at Duke: Probasco for Grand Rounds, guest pain lecture on fibromyalgia, LGBT+ terminogy in geriatrics
A combined palliative care and geriatrics grand rounds (mistakenly in listed in last week's issue) will discuss LGBT+ terminology in geriatrics on Monday. John Probasco, MD, Neurology's  vice chair for quality, safety, and service at Johns Hopkins, will deliver this week's Grand Rounds.On Thursday, Claudia Suommer, MD, PhD, will discuss fibromyalgia for a Duke Pain seminar.
