French Version of Newsletter available!

This month we are piloting translation of The African FLASH to FRENCH so that we can reach people in French West Africa and other French speaking countries. If you would like to be part of this test or of a French mailing list for future editions, please send your contact information and we will send you a copy. We'd also be happy to subscribe your French speaking friends who are interested in ACLENet's work.

Note: ACLENet is entirely supported by donations and grants and receives no government funds or assistance from either the US or Uganda where our operations are currently centered. All who work with ACLENet donate their time and expertise – the only paid staff are the few (but wonderful) employees we support in Uganda.

Two dead  and six injured by lightning in Morocco

Two boys were killed and six others injured on Monday, 1 March 2021, by lightning following storm disturbances, while playing soccer in the Douar Chaoui part of the commune of Zemrane Charqia
according to the authorities of the province of El Kelâa des Sraghna.

Local authorities, the Royal Gendarmerie, and Civil Protection services quickly responded and the injured were evacuated to the local hospital in Tamellalt and the regional hospital of El Kelâa des Sraghna to receive care.

LIGHTNING IS A THREAT EVEN OUTSIDE THE TROPICS
Morocco, a country found in northwestern corner of Africa, is outside the tropics so one might conclude that there is little risk of injury or death from lightning. Morocco also seems to be 'low risk' because it is largely dessert with little rainfall, particularly in the location where it struck earlier this month, killing two boys and injuring six others.

March 2021 opened with the fatal lightning incident in central Morocco in the province of El Kelâa des Sraghna. The boys who died or were injured were playing soccer in an open-air field when lightning struck. This is similar to the recent mass casualty incident in August of 2020 when ten boys were killed at a soccer game near the town of Odramacaku at the border between Uganda and DRC. The problem in both cases seems to be that young boys find it difficult to stop a game when it starts to rain. They are filled with energy and don't think about the danger of lightning and thunderstorms.

It will take time and multi-dimensional efforts to make it common knowledge that ‘When thunder roars, go indoors’ should be a guiding rule. In some cases, there might not be observable roaring of thunder, particularly if this was the first strike of the storm, but many times lightning is part of clouds that bring rain or drizzle. This is the public safety information that we need to drive into the minds of everybody across Africa.

FOCUS: Stephan Schmitt, a lightning professional with Meteorage France, has volunteered to screen and translate French language reports of lightning injuries in Africa. His report is the Lead Story this month and he is also helping with translating The African Flash into a French edition.

We welcome all volunteers to help us build a database on lightning injuries, deaths and property damage across Africa!
LIGHTNING MYTHS AND FOLKLORE

SUDIKA-MBAMBI
Ambundu Thunder Gods - Thundering Hero Twins

Sudika-mbambi and Kabundungulu are miraculous thundering twin brothers. They were formed ready to go — and go they did, destroying demons, mangling monsters and mating with witches.

Their most perilous adventure was invading the Underworld and carrying off two daughters of the Underworld King. After much dispute over who was to marry which witch, they set up separate strongholds, one in the East and one in the West.

The noise of rolling thunder is the sound of them calling to each other across the sky - no need for cellphones!
