April 2021

Dear Parents,

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis proclaims God as Creator of everything. I took a walk this afternoon, and the signs of spring were prominently displayed in all their beauty. God took the barren trees and filled them with buds of new growth. Some azalea bushes boasted new bright flowers while others will burst forth in a day or two. The brown grass of winter is now dotted with patches of green. Flowering trees, a cloudless sky, and the warmth of the sun reminded me once again of God’s ability to transform nature. “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.” (Genesis 1:31a)

The same God who created every living thing made you and me. I love the verse in Ephesians 2:10 that says, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”  In some translations the word handiwork is workmanship or masterpiece. I can scarcely take that in. The same God that paints his canvas with extraordinary color chose to create me to do good works. This is humbling. As you consider the results of God’s creation, consider how he has made you to do his work.

This week, we will celebrate Arts and Science Day on Friday. Whether gazing at a planetarium or making art, we give thanks to our amazing God, the Creator of all.

In Him,

Maryellen

Annual Student Art Show
In light of our usual in-person art festivities, Whitefield will be holding a Virtual Art Show in the month of April. Each division will virtually host displays of our students’ amazing talent on the web and through Instagram. The art show during the first week of April will look a bit different due to COVID precautions, but it will celebrate Lower School artists still! Hallway bulletin boards will display students’ work and the pictures will be placed on Google Classroom and on Instagram @whitefield_ls_visualart. More details and links to come next week.

Arts and Science Day
This Friday, the Lower School celebrates Arts and Science Day with a variety of activities for every age in both science and in art. Children should wear non-uniform clothes that they can get messy (jeans or shorts of an appropriate length are fine). We have adjusted to ensure that this day-long celebration is both safe and fun for the students. Many thanks to our parent volunteers, our parent leaders for this day (Marissa Nobles, Stacey Lula, Darragh Moore, Jessica Hayslip, and Robyn Feather), science teacher Jessica Bassett, and art teacher Marie Baughman.

Pre-boxed School Supplies
This year, you will have the ability to purchase school supplies online and have them delivered to your child’s desk at the start of the school year. Should you choose to shop for items, you can certainly still do that. We have partnered with a local company that gathers the specific brand and type of materials on the teachers’ lists and delivers them to the school in a box. Look for flyers in the Thursday folder this month.

A Note from Nurse Rogers
Please read the following note from Jessica Rogers: “This past year during the pandemic, I have experienced a deeper passion in the area of infection prevention. I have decided to accept a position as an Infection Prevention Nurse at WellStar Kennestone Hospital. This decision was extremely difficult because of the wonderful community at Whitefield, but it is where I feel the Lord is leading me to go. I feel abundantly blessed to have had the opportunity to work with the Lower School.”

While we will miss Jessica, I know you will join me in wishing her the best as she follows God’s call to serve. Jessica’s last day will be April 16. Jennifer Barnes will serve as a long-term substitute.

Save the date for Whitefield’s Inaugural In-House Book Fair
We are excited to announce that Whitefield’s Inaugural Book Fair will be held April 26-30, 2021, for grades PreK to 6th. We will host the Bedford Falls book fair in the Brostrand Hall Media Center. Students will have assigned times during the week to come make their purchases. There will also be times available after school for families to sign up to shop together.

Families will contribute funds electronically for their student’s account to make their purchases. On-line shopping is also available. The books required for summer reading will be available as well as a Wish List for the Brostrand Hall Media Center. A portion of the proceeds will benefit our library program. Stay tuned for additional information! For more information, contact librarian Lynn Handley.

Lemonade Days
The 4th graders will participate in Lemonade Days on April 15 and 16. When COVID removed the opportunity to go to Driftwood, 4th grade teachers and administration envisioned a way to make lemonade out of lemons! From devotionals to rotations of fun activities along with special entertainment and delicious food, our 4th graders will have the sweetest lemonade days ever! Thank you to our parent volunteers for this day as well.

4th Grade Lunch
Parents of 4th graders, there are a few more slots available if you have not yet signed up to eat lunch with your child.  Please sign up here. Note that this is only for parents and no food may be brought into the school.
