The Plant Sale Is On

The plant sale is in full swing. Pick-up is June 3-5, and orders are open through May 18. Like last year, we will ask you to schedule your pick-ups at either the Maywood or Lemont location to ensure a covid-safe process. Best to place your order as soon as possible. We are re-stocking some plants that sold out. Check back if you missed out.

If you’ve made your purchase, schedule your pickup time.
Browse our selection. We have kits for butterflies, birds and bees, parkways, and woodland. Some 29 plants are new to the sale this year.

U.N Recognition of Morton Freshman Center

Morton Freshman Center’s 10,000 square-foot butterfly habitat in Cicero, Illinois was featured in a United Nations video celebrating the International Day of Forest.

Led by biology teacher Kevin O'Toole and several faculty members, eight students designed the garden. Groups in Cicero and nearby communities assisted in the habitat's creation.  West Cook Wild Ones donated funds in honor of Art Gara, installed shrubs and plants, and cooperated in maintenance.

Is Your Garden Ready for Spring Migratory Birds?

About 500 species of birds will migrate through Illinois this year. The Chicago area is an important refuge for the migratory species. Many have just flown over the corn belt, where places safe to rest and forage are too few and far between. New on our blog, learn what you can do for these birds in your yard.

BIRD FEEDING WITHOUT BIRDFEEDERS

How did seed-eating birds eat before bird feeders? Kate Caldwell, an Interpretive Naturalist at Plum Creek Nature Center, discusses which native plants attract the insects needed for our birds to feed their young. Even seed-eating birds feed insects to their young.

This is a virtual meeting using Zoom on April 6  at 7 PM CDT made possible by Midwest SOARRING Foundation (Save Our Ancestors Remains & Resources Indigenous Network Group).
