Breakfast Before 8:30 AM: Reduced Diabetes Risk

A recent Northwestern University study found that eating before 8:30 AM may reduce diabetes risk! The study looked at 10,575 adults and found that insulin resistance was lower for those who start eating before 8:30 AM across all groups. Food timing may be a simple lifestyle change to help you decrease your risk of diabetes!

The Huddle: Covid, Mental Wellbeing, and Brain Health

Our Thursday evening community huddles are back with new health topics on the last Thursday of every month at 5:30 PM. IIT Bay-Area Alumni has also joined us as a partner for these huddles. The first huddle of this year, however, will be on May 20, with experts on mental wellness and brain health.

We are living in extraordinary times, in the middle of a prolonged pandemic. Just when the end appears to be in sight, it moves away, an elusive target. As we are caught in this whirlpool of collective trauma, we have also each been spinning with our individual traumas, be it losing our loved ones, or employment, relationships and such. At the same time we worry about our own long term brain health, as we see those we know and love slipping into dementia and related disorders.

Dr. Kalpana Nathan, Chief Medical Director, Scrivner Center, Mental Health and Addiction Services at El Camino Health, will discuss the continuum of mental health, from flourishing to languishing to depression. She will review these reemerging concepts as many find themselves in stagnation, talk about how we climb out from here, and how we renew a sense of purpose and vitality.

Dr. Alka Kanaya, Professor of Medicine at UCSF, Principal Investigator of the MASALA study, and Co-investigator of the CARE registry, will discuss the difference between Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, the risk factors that are linked to Alzheimer’s disease, and the 8 controllable tips in maintaining brain health.

Ask questions, hear other community members, and feel inspired to work on your health.
