Old Pittsburgh River Rescue boat sinks in Allegheny River

An old River Rescue boat sank outside the boathouse overnight, apparently due to high winds forcing water into the hull, the Pittsburgh Public Safety Department said Monday.

Video from Pittsburgh's Action News 4 showed the boat underwater next to the boathouse along the Allegheny River on the city's North Shore.

Two operational boats, including a new River Rescue boat, were parked inside the boathouse and were not damaged, Public Safety spokesman Chris Togneri said.

"Crews will work to determine why the old boat sank, but it appears that high winds forced water into the hull of the old boat docked outside and the pump failed causing the sinking," Togneri said.

What’s It Like For Communities Slowly Transitioning To Renewables?

This interview discusses the transition to renewable energy sources with Pennsylvania County Executive, Rich Fitzgerald (D).

Transitioning to renewables holds great promise. In 2020, even with the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, clean energy demand in the US proved resilient as renewables and storage recorded declining costs and rising capacity and usage factors. The Biden/Harris administration is executing a platform that includes rejoining the Paris Climate Accord, investing $2 trillion in clean energy, and fully decarbonizing the power sector by 2035 — with the larger goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Groups Urge Continued Support for H2Ohio

In less than two years, H2Ohio has spurred dozens of water-quality improvement projects from Lake Erie to the Ohio River, and supporters say the program is just getting started.

Gov. Mike DeWine's biennial budget plan includes continued funding for the H2Ohio Initiative, which was launched in late 2019 to reduce harmful algal blooms, improve wastewater infrastructure and address lead contamination.

Cody Weisbrodt, government relations policy associate for The Nature Conservancy in Ohio, said the H2Ohio program has enjoyed robust support from a unique combination of stakeholders.

"Some of the most vocal supporters have really been both the farm bureau and the agricultural community and then the conservation and environmental community," Weisbrodt pointed out. "And then there are also business and community organizations. I think we all recognize that this is really a once-in-a-generation opportunity."
