Think, Feel and Act Like a Leader

Hi <<First Name>>
Here are your latest articles, links, hints and tips on being a better leader.

Think Like a Leader

‘Every job looks easy till you're the one doing it’ said Jeff Immelt.  Just one of the ways our own superior thinking can lead us to take colleagues for granted. Incivility and disrespect towards others begins with how we think about ourselves and how we think about others.

Feel Like a Leader

Being respectful is simply showing politeness or honour to someone. In the everyday workplace it may be as simple as the daily common courtesies being practised, not dependent on our mood but with routine and habit.

Act Like a Leader

The great paradox is that you, as the mature and balanced leader, should give respect unconditionally, but expect to have to earn it from others. So that means your actions should always be respectful to others, regardless of how they are responding to you.
How to lead with respect and avoid mediocrity with Gregg Ward | The Center for Respectful Leadership

Not many business leaders have put as much work into the topic of respectfulness as Gregg Ward. Listen to this interview where he explains more about his work and book.

  2. Practise regular respect
  3. Be respect-worthy
  4. Look for diamonds in the rough
  5. Get your shift together
  6. Nip disrespectful behaviour in the bud, respectfully
  7. Offer a full apology for disrespect

The Leader's View

The Soldier’s Bridge side by side with the Fort William - Mallaig line bridge across the River Lochy. Photographer Anthony Epes wrote an article about finding beauty in the mundane. He defines mundane as “the everyday, ordinary, or banal.”  He explains that “it’s easy to take amazing shots of amazingly beautiful places.   But to create something beautiful, or find beauty in the mundane? That’s a skill that is fantastic to have and one that’s worth developing because it will help your photography as a whole.”

There is grace to be found in the mundane.

The Respectful Leader: Seven Ways to Influence Without Intimidation by Gregg Ward.  Published in 2018 by Orlando-Ward & Associates, Inc.

This has been a best-seller and may be challenging to source. It is also available on audiobook.

Here’s some interesting information on being respectful.  There are many, many books on how to get respect – but very few on how to give it.  Does that explain why so many organisations are struggling with disrespect and incivility?  We all want others to respect us but are not prepared to put in the diligence and kindness to give it to others?

Anyway, back to this book – full of sensible and practical advice.  In this true-to-life business fable, Gregg Ward shares the story of Des Hogan, a CEO who discovers that disrespectful behaviour on the part of his leadership team is eating away at his company's morale, productivity, and profits.

At a loss for a solution, he meets Grace—a straight-shooting, self-described "little old lady" in the maintenance department. With her no-nonsense advice, he sets out to revamp the culture and turn his company around; but first, he has to turn inward and realise that his own behaviour sets the tone for the company at every level.
