WKF & Surrey Schools Lunchtime Program

With lunchtime programs in our ongoing partnership with Surrey Schools we have been proud to work with kids during their lunch break to introduce and practice fundamental movement skills and further develop physical literacy. Through instruction on fundamental physical movement patterns, participants are able to develop an understanding of such movements which can be used to prevent injuries in the future as well as provide them with the knowledge to carry out a physically active lifestyle. Interactions between instructor and participants are very open and invite productive discussion which can be used to benefit the understanding of concepts.

The coaches at these lunchtime programs are positive mentors and share their experiences in University & Pro athletics with the youth.
We are very thankful to our partner United Way for donating 10,000 masks for our programs, children, youth, & families!
"Game Ready is the best thing. Game Ready taught me new workouts. My favorite memory was all the drills we learned. Also, it pushed me to be my best. Game Ready makes me feel like an athlete and I like challenges. And you girls and guys are the best. Thank you. Be safe. Also don’t forget hard work pays off. Thank you Terry for driving. This is for anyone!"
This poster was made by one of our young athletes. Thank you very much Lena for the kind words, we are very grateful to have you in our program!
"Her Time" Program Video

"Her Time on the North Shore has been going exceedingly well. All of the girls are enjoying their time in the program and look forward to coming every week. We have been doing many art projects along with the Her Time playbook activities which has allowed the girls really open up and show us who they are. We have been working on developing the girls' athletic ability/physical literacy. Our music room is almost completed so in time we will be doing more musical activities with the girls. We hope that the girls will continue coming to the program as we want it to feel like their second home. The development of their well-being and health are extremely important to our coaches and in time we hope to see all the things that they may succeed in."
- Tiffany Johnson GRF & WKF North Vancouver Coach

"As a program, we have been growing in many directions. We now have two different age groups running four nights a week at our Surrey centre. Our youth have been demonstrating personal growth in regards to bettering themselves and their peers. As coaches we are very proud of where these girls are going and how fast the program is building."
- Jaime Rourke GRF & WKF Cloverdale Coach
Claudell Louis visits GR Academy to share his story; a Haitian man who persevered and found opportunities through football in North America. Currently he is a professional football player for the BC Lions, and is involved as a public speaker for the Ending Violence Association.
Game Ready Sports Academy

Game Ready Sports Academy for optimizing athletic performance (OAP) at the Centennial Secondary School gives the students the skills to further their knowledge of high level fitness. We also coach these youth on how to critically think about what their post secondary plans are and how to accomplish them. The work ethic of these students paired with the guidance of our experienced coaches will help them attain their goals of competing in athletics at post secondary levels! Currently the youth have been working hard to complete both their coaching certification and online athlete profiles.

"OAP has improved so much in my athletic ability. It has taught me the foundations of sports and how I can improve my athletic ability. On and off the field my mental and physical strengths have improved. I learned how to be a leader and my lead my teammates. As well how to learn from others and gain more knowledge. The program has given me many tools in life and made my love for sports grow even more."
- Connor Jones, current Student in the Academy
Partnerships in North Vancouver

Programs with Mountainside Secondary, Carson Graham's Choices, and the Westview Elementary have been thriving. The youth in all programs have showed a growing excitement in learning physical literacy and fitness week in and week out. The after school programs continue to impact the relationships of the youth in a positive manner as they continue learning how to work hard and have fun together in an controlled/competitive environment.
Coaches Getting Better

Here at the WKF and GRF we always want for our clients to achieve their goals and constantly improve, and we also want the same from our coaching staff. Thanks to Royal Roads University, we have been given the great opportunity for six of our staff members to improve on their leadership abilities and to learn more about coach-client relationships. In this course, through theory classes as well as skill building sessions, they will have the opportunity to polish and stretch their skills. We are very excited as a collective in this organization to see our fellow coaches constantly learning and improving!

LET'S TALK FITNESS!

Incorporating Household Members
During these unprecedented times it can get difficult to to keep motivated. To keep your training interesting during this Pandemic, reach out and involve people within your household. This can create a fun competition and help bring people closer together.

At home challenges for your household:
  1. Plank Challenge: Challenge your friends and family via zoom calls to see who can hold the longest plank!
  2. Lunge Challenge: 40 side lunges & 40 lunges with a knee drive on each leg. You do not have to do all the reps at once, if you need to you can spread it out throughout the day with 4 sets of 10 reps to make it easier. Try doing this every day for 30 days and incorporate those within your house hold if you would like!
  3. Jumping Jack Challenge: Compete to see who can do the most amount of jumping jacks within a 3 minutes with proper form. OR if you would like to up the intensity you can do 100-200 jumping jacks per day for 30 days on your own or with partners.
  4. Follow the Leader: Each person takes a turn being the coach where you get the opportunity to choose a workout for everyone in the group to do. When doing this, do your best to have reasonable sets and reps to accompany the workouts (i.e. 4 sets x 15 reps of jump squats).
  5. Outdoor Activities: Soccer, Pass, Basketball, Tennis, Volleyball, Badminton, or any sport/ game that your household takes interest in. If you find that you do not have the numbers in your household to have game then you can either adapt the rules of the game to your situation, or work on some sport-specific skills (like throwing or catching).
  6. Steps Challenge: With the use of a mobile phone app count the amount of steps you have done daily and compare after dinner time to see who has completed the most. you can even compete with friends who are not in your household by creating group chats where you and your friends and post their daily steps.
