Naming the Moment: A Course in Writing for Performance

Taught by Diana Small

As we look towards gathering in real-space with loved ones, perhaps you’re looking to make the most of those opportunities, having experienced the loss of such moments for so long. Naming the Moment is about creating the opportunity for you and your companions to take in the present and to skillfully articulate the significance of a gathering. From the most ordinary gatherings like a quick exchange in the kitchen in the morning, or the more seasonal such as a birthday or a funeral, Naming the Moment will practice crafting and sharing the words that can meaningfully gather us together.

This is a cross-genre workshop in poetry and performance. In this workshop we will write in poetic forms to craft toasts, blessings, songs and prayers (whatever those mean to you in your context—we will take a global approach to unpacking those terms to find how they are helpful in our particular cultures). We will workshop how to then share this language to be heard and witnessed.

We will look at writings from a multitude of traditions & forms to glean how they speak to a particular moment with specificity and significance. We will write our own and practice the art of sharing them.

This class is about integrating the art-making practice into the ordinary and extraordinary moments of our lives. How do you describe a moment so that it can be heard with resonance and impact? How can we name the moment so we don’t miss it?

Time: Tuesdays Starting April 13th, 7-9pm (6 classes total)
$140 (class fees subsidized for all, scholarships available)
Form: Online
Ages 18 and up

More About the Program:

As we launch now our fourth pilot of an arts residency teaching program, there is a collective sense of hope that we are emerging from a dark time, as well as facing challenges still to overcome. These workshops are fundamentally about refreshing and renewing the human spirit, to help us all engage and reengage in our world.

Classes are mostly in a hybrid model, taking place in a mixture of online and outdoors with social distancing. As COVID conditions improve and regulations change we hope to increase in-person instruction. (See each class for specifics and contact teachers with questions.) Thanks to generous support from the Hazen Foundation, class fees are subsidized for all, and scholarships are also available. This program is set up with working adults in mind, especially in the service and helping professions, and all artistic skill levels are welcome from total beginner to advanced. Fundamentally these classes are for all who need them.

In our working lives we are so often told to keep our heads down, not wear our hearts on our sleeves, to keep our mouths shut. These classes offer an opportunity to speak up, to practice skills like curiosity, nuance, empathy, attention, and persistence; skills needed in these changing times. With your participation and support, we hope to continue to build this into an ongoing public service and community of support for all Santa Barbarans.
