Today is March 31, 2021.

  • Out like a... cold, wet lamb. High of 51 today and rain this morning. It'll drop to around 29 tonight and stay in the low 30s into tomorrow with more rain turning into snow showers.

  • Kent State's Porthouse Theater will be returning in June for an extra cautious 2021 season, reports Ideastream.

Artist in residence

Did you know we had a world-renowned wood sculptor among us?

Portage County has produced some extraordinary artists, from Devo to Frederick Loudin. Joe Leonard is one of them.

From his gallery in Garrettsville, Leonard creates masterpieces of woodworking that can be found around the world, from Put-In-Bay to Paris (the city in France, not the township).

Carter Eugene Adams and his camera toured the workshop and gallery earlier this year and produced this interview for us.

  • Speaking of Carter, this is his very last article for The Portager. He's moving on to bigger and better things, and I want to take a second to thank him sincerely for the stories he's brought to life for our community. Carter, thank you for lending us your talent over the past year. The picture above is a perfect example of the magic you do with a camera. I know you'll make a positive difference wherever you direct your energy.

Garrettsville

Going green could help bring business to the village

The Village of Garrettsville was recently awarded $12,322 to install Level 2 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations, reports the Weekly Villager

  • The two charging ports will be at the Garrettsville Municipal Parking Lot on Maple Avenue. Council hopes the stations will attract more visitors to the village.

  • Most commercial Level 2 stations can fully charge an electric vehicle in about three hours.

Local history

Know your Portage County history

On Monday, we mentioned a documentary about the old Brady Lake theme park showing on PBS. Well, over the years, local film producer and Portager reader Fred F. Endres has created a number of documentaries like this showcasing oft-forgotten Portage County history.

  • Four of his films are available to watch online for free.

  • The most recent, Under Fire, Under Siege, premiered on PBS earlier this year and recounts strikebreakers crossing the picket line at the Kent's Black & Decker plant in 1936.

Thanks for all the love during the first week of our subscription drive. We didn't hit our (very ambitious) goal, but we did add about 100 new paid subscribers in a single week, which is incredible and humbling. When reporters come asking me how we solved the news business model problem, I'm going to give the credit where it's due: the Portagers.

That's it for Wednesday! See you back here on Friday.
