Township Updates

Spring Brush Clean Up - The Department of Public Works (DPW) will hold its Spring brush collection on Monday, April 12. This pick-up program is to help remove sticks, branches and brush that fall on the property of residents who have nowhere to discard the materials. Crews will not collect excessive loads cleared by private contractors.

When placing brush out, please follow these guidelines:

  • Place material at the side of the road by 7 a.m., with ends facing the roadway.
  • Do not tie bundles with wire; only use string.
  • Do not put steel rods or any metal objects in with the wood.
  • Bundles must be less than 12 inches in diameter and six feet in length to fit through the wood chipper.
  • No tree stumps or logs more than six feet long.

Marijuana Webinar - Join Committeewoman Amalia Duarte, chair of the Mendhams Stigma-Free Task Force, for a Webinar on Thursday, April 15, at 7 p.m., featuring Police Chief Ross Johnson.

This is an opportunity to learn about the new marijuana law and ask questions. The law follows a referendum in November on legalizing marijuana that passed by an overwhelming 67 percent of the vote.

Save the Date - On May 6, at 7 p.m., join the Stigma-Free Task Force for "Talk Saves Lives" presented by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. This Webinar is in recognition of May as Mental Health Awareness Month. Registration details coming soon!
Police Updates
As the weather warms up and residents are heading outside, please drive carefully and obey all speed limits and traffic regulations!
  • The police headquarters lobby has reopened for walk-ins, from Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
  • Our community has been hit with home mailbox frauds once again. Please do not leave any outgoing mail, especially with any type of checks or payments in your mailbox. It is safer to mail it at the post office or drop it in a secure post office mailbox.
  • Get ready for the first "Cops, Kids & Cones" event of the season on Thursday, May 6, from 5 p.m.-7 p.m., in the lot of the township municipal building.
Environmental Commission
Native Plant Webinar - Do you want to see more birds and butterflies in your yard this year? Then, you need to provide the food they love at every stage! Native flowers and bushes support the whole life cycle of butterflies by providing habitat for their young as caterpillars, which in turn provide food at the right time for birds. The Environmental Commission and the Township Library are co-sponsoring a Webinar on Wednesday, April 7, at 7 p.m., featuring Deb Ellis, the founder and co-leader of the Essex County chapter of the Native Plant Society of New Jersey and a Master Gardener. Please register to attend. 
 
Learn about invasive species and how to replace them with easy-care and beautiful natives. This workshop is perfect for all gardeners, whether beginners or experienced, who want to support pollinators.
Recreation Department

The Beach is Back! - Registration is open for Brookside Beach's 2021 Summer Season. The Recreation Department is really excited to welcome all the familiar faces back and welcome new friends as well! Swim lessons and snacks are back, too! 

The Beach will be open on weekends, starting on Memorial Day Weekend, and then open daily for the season starting on June 11. Hours are 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Sign up by May 1 and enjoy an early-bird discount price, which is the same rate as last year. After May 1, prices will increase by $25. Residents pay $125 per family; $50 for individuals. Non-residents pay $150 per family and $65 for individuals.

US Sports Programs - Sign up now for spring soccer and multi-sport camps for children ages 2 - 5, and summer golf programs for ages 4-11. All programs are offered at Wysong Field through the US Sports Institute in conjunction with the Recreation Department.

Outdoor Activities at Schiff Nature Preserve

Find Yourself in the Woods - Learn practical map and compass skills during this outdoor class on Saturday, April 3, at 9 a.m. You will better understand information provided on a map; the proper use of a compass; and how to put the two together. After covering the fundamentals, participants will put their new skills to work by planning a route. This class is appropriate for children ages 12 and over and adults. Members pay $5 each; non-members pay $10. Register today. 

Geocaching for Beginners - Look for hidden geocaches at
Schiff, as you learn about this popular activity on Saturday, April 10, at 9 a.m. Participants (ages 5 and up) will use a Global Positioning System receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide-and-seek containers, called "geocaches" or "caches," at locations marked by coordinates at Schiff and, later, all over the world. Free for members; non-members pay $5 per person. Register online.

Kids Earth Day Celebration - On Wednesday, April 21, from 3:30 p.m. - 5 p.m., children ages 5-9 (grades K-3) are invited to "Restore Our Earth" at Schiff. This fun-filled afternoon of adventure features activities focused on nature and protecting the environment. Construct a shelter for wildlife. Go on an invasive-species scavenger hunt. And, participate in a litter-clean up challenge. These are just a few of the exciting plans in store! This is a drop-off program, and capacity is limited to 12. Member fee is $10 per child; non-members pay $15 per child. Register soon before this program closes.

Spring Tours at the Cider Mill - Make your reservations now! The historic Ralston Cider Mill Museum will be open in May on a limited basis for small-group or individual tours by appointment. The museum is a historic cider mill, with all of the original operational equipment. Constructed as a gristmill in 1848, it later produced applejack and peach brandy in the early 1900's.

Regular hours for tours are Sundays, from 1 p.m. - 5 pm., with availability during the week by request. Face coverings are required. Admission is $5 per person.

COVID-19 Vaccine Help - If you are 65+ and need assistance scheduling an appointment for the COVID-19 vaccine, contact the library for help. They have partnered with WGirls and their program, New York and New Jersey Vaccine Matchmakers, to help residents, especially the elderly, make appointments.

Museum of Slavery Tour - On Thursday, April 1, at 7 p.m.. take a 45-minute virtual tour of the Lest We Forget Museum of Slavery, located in Philadelphia. See the extensive collection of authentic and rare artifacts, demonstrating the horrific life endured by enslaved Africans.

Children’s Story Time - The littlest library patrons are invited to join Miss Rachel for story time on on Zoom, alternating Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 6,14, 20 and 28, at 10:30 a.m. Register.

STEM Club Makes Ice Cream - On Thursday, April 7, at 4 p.m., discover how to make delicious ice-cream at home! The library will supply some ingredients, and participants will need to add a few common items from home. (Some supervision will be needed for younger children). Once registered, wait for an e-mail letting you know when supplies are ready for pick up. Register in advance.

YALC Meeting - On Thursday, April 8, at 7 p.m., the Young Adult Leadership Council (YALC) gathers in front of the library for its monthly meeting to plan events, volunteer and make new friends. This group is for students in grades 6-12. Register in advance. 

Comic Creativity - Learn cartooning techniques from an artist, who creates art for Archie Comics & Grumpy Cat on Tuesday, April 13, at 4 p.m. This class is geared for middle and high school students. Once registered, students will receive details on how to pick up a free art kit.

Needle Felting Group - Drop in via Zoom to felt with friends and neighbors. This group meets on April 21, at 1 p.m., and the third Wednesday of each month. Beginners are welcome! Register online. 

Celebrate Earth Day - On Thursday, April 22, at 4:15 p.m., young children can join Miss Rachel on Zoom to make a craft and play Earth Day bingo! Register today.

Hello Hemingway - April is Ernest Hemingway month! Watch the PBS Documentary by Ken Burns on Monday, April 5, and read the Hemingway classic "A Farewell to Arms." The club will meet via Zoom or outside of the library, depending on weather on April 28, at 1:30 p.m., and on the last Wednesday of each month. Register today.

Historic Hike - Learn about the history of India Brook Park with industrial archeologist Bierce Riley on Thursday, April 29, at 7 p.m. Join this fascinating tour of the remnants of an iron mine, steam engine base with anchor bolts, waterpower systems, abutments for an iron truss bridge and more. This is sure to delight history buffs and nature lovers alike. Register today!
