The 8th APFSD: Bring Up Local Governments' Voices for Further Participation in SDGs Localisation
23-26 March 2021 | Under the framework of Asia-Pacific Local Governments Coordinating Body (APLG), the voices of local governments as the major stakeholder were heard at the 8th Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD). The event was organised by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) in a hybrid format. The annual forum reviewed the progress of the 2030 Agenda in the region. Taking the theme “Sustainable and Resilient Recovery from the COVID-19 Pandemic in Asia and the Pacific,” the APFSD also included an in-depth review of SDGs 1, 2, 3, 8, 10, 12, 13, 16, and 17. Click

Local Governments Seek Enabling Environment in Migration Governance
10-12 March 2021 | UCLG ASPAC, the coordinator of the Asia-Pacific Local Government Coordinating Body, represented local governments within the Asia-Pacific region in the first Asia-Pacific Regional Review of Implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, an event organised by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the Regional UN Network on Migration for Asia and the Pacific. It is a state-led regional preparatory process for the global review of the implementation status of the Global Compact. Since its adoption in 2018, this is the first time that the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) has undergone a review process. Outcomes of the regional review will feed into the International Migration Review Forum in 2022. Click

Training of Trainers on Fundamentals of Resilient Governance and Development
9-11 March 2021 | UCLG ASPAC continues its commitment to support local governments in the Asia-Pacific region in enhancing their cities resilience through a Training of Trainers (ToT) that involved 30 trainers from cities and associations of the four sub-regions of Asia and the Pacific. The ToT was conducted in collaboration with the Learning Team of UCLG World and contributed to the new development of Learning Module 1 on the localisation of the Sendai Framework, developed by UCLG World in partnership with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat). The module aims to support local governments and the creation of an enabling environment for disaster risk reduction (DRR) and resilience building. Click

Daejeon Dust Suction Trucks: Clean and Fresh Air for People
THE increasingly urbanised world has made clean and fresh air in the city scarce. To tackle this challenge, the City of Daejeon deploys dust section trucks to ensure people breathe cleaner and fresh air. The initiative was developed by Mayor Hur Tae-jeong as one of his pledges during the election in 2018 and has been implemented since 2019. Daejeon successfully removed 71 tons of fine dust on roads by deploying Dust Suction Trucks. The truck is specially manufactured to clean fine dust by vacuuming the dust and discharging clean air with a filter that removes 98% of the fine dust. Click

The 2021 Gyeonggi Basic Housing Conference: Eyeing to Meet Basic Housing Needs
25 February 2021 | Gyeonggi – The fulfilment of basic housing needs is one of the milestones that a city needs to achieve. In relation to this, Gyeonggi Province and the Gyeonggi Housing and Urban Corporation held the ‘2021 Gyeonggi Basic Housing Conference’ at the Suwon Convention Centre on February 25, 2021. Domestic and foreign experts made basic housing policy proposals, presented overseas cases, and engaged in discussions. The conference was designed to gain insights from discussions of implications of overseas public rental policies; basic housing rental (long-term lease) directions and models; and basic housing sale (public land lease) models.
