Families Meet & Greet

It was great to see families of our students from Prep - Year 12 attend our annual event which was held on Tuesday 23rd February at the Mary Mackillop Centre. Some great yarns and a great opportunity to hear about all the initiatives of the Indigenous Education Team. We were also thrilled to receive three applications to represent parents (P-6) at the IEAC (Indigenous Education Advisory Committee). Nomination forms have been sent out.
Bambarama Garden

When we were invited to support the Native Garden on the Ryan Campus, we did not realise we would literally open up a can of worms! We started by asking our Traditional’s Owners, the Wulgurukaba nation about a naming word for the garden. When we visited the site together, they shared an unfortunate historical truth about how many first nations people did not meet with a good end on this land. This led to finding a word that means 'make good' as that is what this garden will be doing and sharing this truth telling with the community. We had the unveiling and blessing with a traditional smoking ceremony on Wednesday 10th March followed by a water ritual by our Parish Priests which was live streamed simultaneously to the Yrs 5-12 Assembly in Emmaus Hall. It was a solemn and moving event that was well received. We are so proud to be part of this truth telling at the College and to be able to welcome the College Community to the Bambarama Garden.

On Thursday 11th March, we were privileged to host Uncle Russell Butler (local bush tucker expert) to share his knowledge and stories about sustainability. He yarned with Yr 7, 9, 12, 1 & 2 classes. A lot of wide eyed wonder from these sessions!

Junior Campus - New mural

On Wednesday 17th March at the end of the Assembly, we officially launched our Junior campus mural. A short video was sent to all classrooms and it went live on Facebook too. Five classes (Prep - Year 4) were invited down to the space to view and ask questions which they did very well. The Artist, Nicky Pryor from Bidju Designs created this vibrant mural to complement our Yarning Circle space using the totems of the Wulgurukaba, the Brolga, White Cockatoo and the Warrior shield along with our school pillars of Community, Journey and Service as symbols. We also managed to include the house colours. We hope you can identify them!

Burara Mentoring Program

Years 10 - 12

We have re-launched our regular program called the Burara Mentoring program which seeks to match Years 10, 11 & 12 students with an external mentor (an ex-student who is Indigenous or another mature adult).  Our event at Kingpin Bowling on Wednesday 17th March, saw over 30 people attend with the Mentors and students having a good chance to yarn in between bowling, laser tag and snacks. We are looking forward to a great year ahead with one-on-one mentoring and events each term which will see us gathering as a group.

Student Achievement

We are very proud to announce that our Yr 11 student Makayla Dass has been chosen to be on the YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament representing Thuringowa. Participants will form committees and, over the course of the program, each committee will develop a Youth Bill which will be debated at Parliament House in September. The program runs from April until October and Makayla will be invited to travel to Brisbane in the school holidays for the first event. We wish her all the best!

Anushka Tanna  was selected to participate in the National Schools Constitutional Convention program on Wednesday 24 March and Thursday 25 March 2021. The 2021 convention program is being delivered nationwide online with over 115 students participating via state and territory hubs. The purpose of the convention program is to promote learning about the Australian Constitution – including how it shapes our democracy – and understanding of our democratic heritage and tradition; and provide students with the opportunity to meaningfully engage with important civic issues.

Yarning Circle

On Friday 19th March we held our first Yarning Circle for the year with our Year 8’s and 12’s and special guest, Kallum Cotteral. Unfortunately, the rain kept us away from our beautiful Yarning space but we were still able to meet and keep dry in E2, next door to our new office instead. We have also held Yarning Circles for most other year groups and have enjoyed our yarns with the students about their goals for 2021.

Our Prep students having a yarn and learning about the Yarning Circle.
Shalom Reading Program

This year, 12 students in years 9-12 have signed up for our reading program with Shalom Christian College, which has meant that we have been able to expand to deliver the program on two mornings each week. This means that outside their classrooms, students in Prep-Year 2 at Shalom are getting the opportunity to read aloud twice a week with our students helping them with some of their tricky words. Students from both schools have thoroughly enjoyed this program and we look forward to starting up again in Week 2 next term. If your child/ren are interested in joining us next term, make sure to collect a permission slip from the Indigenous Education Support Office in Week 1.

What's New?!?!
New Indigenous Office

The Indigenous Support Office is excited to have moved to our very own space in E1A (the old Career's office) in E Block. This space now allows for us to have more room for our staff to all be together and room for the students to come and yarn with us. Homework Club and Tutoring is now next door to our office in  E1 and E2. Students and teachers are visiting us more often which is wonderful to see!

Breakfast Club
This term we have started a Breakfast Club twice a week as a way of informally catching up with students and to make sure they are getting some brain food! On Mondays we have the Years 9-12 students and on Thursdays we have students from Years 5-8. Please encourage your children to come along and bring a friend if they wish. We have toasties, yoghurts, muffins and fruit.

Acknowledgement of Country
Students are being encouraged to write their own acknowledgements of country in their spare time, especially during Homework Club if they have finished their work. This is a great opportunity for students to be engaged in their culture and also supports their Emerging Leaders journey. They are also encouraged to write a prayer that can be read out during Homeroom.
New Staff Member
Alesha Johnson - Indigenous Teacher Aide

My name is Alesha Johnson and I have just done my first term working as a Teacher Aide in Indigenous Support at Ryan Catholic College.  I am of Aboriginal descent from the Wulli Wulli and Gangulu Tribes. I have lived and grown up in Townsville my whole life and have been working with children for 10 years from ages 0 to 18. I have enjoyed my time and have found it very rewarding and I look forward to working with everyone to ensure our children succeed.

Emerging Leaders

The Emerging Leaders Incentive scheme for 2021 has kicked off. Welcome to all students on the program and an extra special welcome to all students who have enrolled this year for the first time. We look forward to an exceptional year ahead.

Personal Leadership Agreements

The Personal Leadership Agreement document is an agreement between the student, parents/carers and their mentor. This document is necessary as it guides the students to choose what their Personal Incentive Goal will be for the year. All students must have completed this document, and parents have signed it in order to be a part of the incentive level component of the Emerging Leaders Program. We have just completed all students Personal Leadership Agreements for the year, so this is great news!

Indigenous Homeroom

This year in Indigenous Homeroom, we are trialling something new. Earlier this term, we asked for nominations from students in all year groups to be the ‘Indigenous Homeroom Leaders’ for their specific year level. We had quite a few nominations which was great to see.

From the nomination forms submitted, the Team in Indigenous Education has chosen two students from each year level to be awarded Homeroom Leaders. The list is as follows:

Year 7:

Lathan King & Payten McGrath

Year 8:

Dylan Geary & Chloe Logan

Year 9:

Emily Clark & Xavier Spry-De La Cruz

Year 10:

Aaliyah Coleman & William Poole

Year 11:

Lexi Laidlow & Jesyka Mackay

Year 12:

Daniel Clark & Isabella Gaston

The role of these students includes but is not limited to; being the voice of the students in their year group, assisting the Indigenous Education team with processes in Homeroom such as Acknowledgements of Country and Prayer, and also to assist other students to come up with ideas and interesting activities that we can implement in our Homeroom time.

Congratulations not only to the students awarded this role, but also to the other students who entered in a nomination form.

Engagement Trackers

Once again this year, our Engagement Trackers for Emerging Leaders are all online.

As Engagement is one of the three main pillars in the Emerging Leaders Program, it is very important that all activities that students participate in, commit to or lead, need to be tracked. This is an integral part of the process that we take into account when doing the Incentive level Acquittals in Term 4 this year.

A tracking document has been allocated to all students (including year 7’s) on the program via the ‘Ryan Emerging Leaders’ Google Classroom. Homeroom time is a perfect opportunity for students to be completing this tracker and making sure it is up to date.
