This week at OPSI, we have been thinking about innovations in government that are forerunners to changing or challenging the status quo. What are their qualities? How can we learn from them? Are they destined to burn out due to their vanguard elements?

JUST IN: Early to rise, early to fall – the destiny of vanguard projects in the public sector?

Groundbreaking public sector projects often rapidly spur innovation, but perhaps just as often, fail to embed or "stick". Our latest blog explores some of the reasons why projects on the forefront of innovation face barriers to sustainability and permanence.

This week, OPSI is featuring two vanguard government innovations that it believes pushed boundaries and were ahead of their time. While no longer in operation today, these forerunner efforts sparked new ways of thinking and helped to pave the way for future efforts.

Featured Case Study: The Service Innovation Lab

The Service Innovation Lab was an all-of-government neutral space enabling agencies to collaboratively innovate to make it easier for people to access government services. It worked to direct funding towards systemic improvements, horizontal efforts around shared goals, high-value reusable components and actionable innovation for participating public sector organisations.

While the lab closed on 30 June 2020, its tools, projects, and lessons are still available and serve as valuable resources for others working on improving government services.

Featured Toolkit: MindLab Methods

MindLab was a pioneering innovation lab that provided practical innovation support within the Danish public sector. While MindLab has since closed, this toolkit offers an archive of tools to help find and define problems and intuitive new approaches to solving them. This toolkit contains some of the most commonly used tools in the design practice, including user journey and pattern recognition.

How do you design a good innovation network?

OPSI is actively compiling an international catalogue of public sector innovation networks and recently held a meet-up of network conveners to share common experiences and insights, from which we have written up a summary of our findings. You can also view our growing catalogue and add your own network here

Public Sector Innovation Scan of Denmark
Lessons from the 2021 Mission-oriented Innovation Simulation
In partnership with the Danish National Centre for Public Sector Innovation (COI), we produced a scan of Denmark's public sector innovation system. This scan reflects on the innovation journey of Denmark and their future possibilities stewarding anticipatory and mission-oriented innovation.
Together with the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose, we developed a mission-oriented innovation toolbox and mission design canvas, then invited organisations to a simulation to test mission-based approaches on the real cases.  See the toolbox and read our blog on the learnings and results.
