COVID Response: vaccines available on campus
Students are now able to register for Moderna COVID-19 vaccines at Calvin! In addition, the West Michigan Vaccine Clinic at DeVos Place has openings this week for Pfizer vaccines. Given today’s CDC recommendation, Calvin is pausing on Johnson & Johnson distribution. The State of Michigan is encouraging all college students to be vaccinated before going home; students can also start a vaccine series here and complete it at their local health department. (Moderna requires at least 28 days between doses; Pfizer requires 21 days.) Fully vaccinated students do not need to do a 14-day quarantine if they are a close contact of a confirmed positive case.
We have 23 days to the end of spring semester—and our positive cases are climbing. COVID cases in Kent County and Michigan are soaring. We know students are fighting pandemic fatigue, and yet we’re asking them to (1) persevere with wearing masks and social distancing, (2) get vaccinated as soon as possible, and (3) report even mild symptoms promptly so we can end this semester well with no further restrictions. Remind your student how proud you are of them, and encourage them to finish strong!

Commencement planning, gifts for grads
The Commencement website has been updated with new FAQs and class-specific pages, and this site will continue to be updated as plans are confirmed. Encourage your Class of 2021 grads to watch their emails for degree verification (sent March 31), cap/gown orders or photo submission instructions (April 14), and ticket ordering open (by April 28).
Families can also download templates for yard signs and invitations now, or shop for Commencement-branded items (available Friday).
Professor shout-out
Which of your student’s professors has inspired, challenged, or encouraged your student this year? Send an email to Provost Cheryl Brandsen at provost@calvin.edu to make sure these teachers and mentors are recognized for making a difference in students' lives.
