Spring is a reason for renewed hope. As more vaccinations roll out, I’m reminded about what life was before, and hopeful for what it might be like. COVID-19 showed us what we’re made of and who we can become as we move into this new season.

DSAMH wants you to know that your work to care for people with mental health and substance use conditions during the pandemic is seen and appreciated. “Essential” doesn’t begin to characterize your strength, resilience, and selflessness. From adapting to telehealth modalities to providing meal services, and distributing personal protective equipment, this crisis galvanized our field into action.

With funds from our State Opioid Response grant, we are leveraging that energy to address an ongoing crisis exacerbated by COVID-19: the opioid epidemic. The Opioid Response Provider Network will enhance our substance use disorder treatment and recovery system, while increasing our capacity to provide medications for opioid use disorders, distribute Naloxone, address social needs, and advance health equity.

I invite you to get involved in our efforts to save lives and facilitate pathways to recovery by contacting us at DSAMH.ORT@delaware.gov. Thank you for your commitment to improving the lives of Delawareans every day.

Dr. Sherry Nykiel
DSAMH Medical Director
