Death's One Day
(For Holy Saturday)
The tomb holds everything today,
all of the past from Eden's crooked tree
right through to stark, yet fertile Calvary's,
and any hope that still might lie ahead
to taste the fruit that flourishes
beside the flashing river.
A day for quiet cultivation,
watered well, of course, with prayers,
tears, plus the occasional bright ray
of slow but sure awaking hope
to warm the wintered soil
and light a path toward
tomorrow's garden.
