Dear West Hub community,

We are excited to share with you the latest projects, events, activities and initiatives from data science institutions and organizations all over the Western region. We strive to build partnerships across academia, industry, nonprofits and government, and welcome new opportunities to stay connected.

Women in Data Science 2021

This year's WiDS Datathon 2021 has seen record-breaking participation, with 1,773 individuals coming together to form hundreds of teams and analyze hospital patient health records! The program was organized by the West Hub, along with the WiDS Worldwide team and the WiDS Datathon Committee, and focused on models to determine whether a patient admitted to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has been diagnosed with a particular type of diabetes. Participants of Phase 1 of the datathon are invited to submit a 3-page research paper on their work for the Excellence in Research Award, due by April 30th. Learn more about WiDS 2021 here

HSI-STEM Hub Workshops

The West Hub and the HSI-STEM Hub are collaborating to encourage underrepresented faculty, staff, and faculty to participate in STEM education and research. On April 9th Dr. Martha Desmond and Dr. Delia Valles will guide first-time grant writers through developing various sections of their proposals with the Jumpstart Grantmanship Webinars. And on April 15th the Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) Workshop will provide a general overview of this research-informed, student-centered instructional approach that simultaneously develops discipline content mastery and key process skills. Workshop details and registration here.

Let's Make it COUNT - High School Data Stories

The West Hub's Let's Make it COUNT initiative, in partnership with the US Census Bureau, has recognized the National Census Data Competition awardees. Four projects were featured at Open Data Week in March 2021 and recognized by The Opportunity Project. A network of mentors and high school Junior Ambassadors joined the program from 43 states and the District of Columbia, with over 143,000 unique impressions online. 2021 submissions included interactive data visualizations, hand-drawn illustrations, websites, infographics, posters and a bilingual comic series to explain the importance of the Census. Read a summary of the competition here.

Data Sharing and Distributed Storage in Research
Cyberinfrastructure have historically been small projects for a single PI or large science ventures, although now medium-scale projects are emerging. What architectures and capabilities will be needed by such projects, and what effect will this have on the overall research computing ecosystem? The Open Storage Network is hosting "The Role of Data Sharing and Distributed Storage in Research - Visions of the Future" on April 29th at 9 a.m. that will present prominent, visionary researchers on their perspectives. Learn more here

Cybersecurity as Big Data Science
All Big Data Innovation Hubs invite you to the Cybersecurity as Big Data Science Interactive Workshop on April 12th that aims to understand common and unique data science challenges for cybersecurity data, as well as share best data science practices, technical and non-technical, for cybersecurity challenges. Speakers S. Jay Yang and Sagar Samtani will present, followed by a panel discussion on "Framing Cybersecurity as a Data Science Problem." Learn more here.

Indigenous Data Sovereignty
A webinar titled "Indigenous Data Sovereignty: How Scientists and Researchers can Empower Data Governance" by Dr. Lydia Jennings  (Department of Environmental Sciences, Collaboratory for Indigenous Data Governance, University of Arizona) will be hosted on April 7th at noon. This program is part of the Advancing Ecology and Environmental Data Science for a More Just and Equitable Future series that is organized by the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis. Learn more here.

Covid-19 Research Webinar
Every month, the Northeast Hub brings together a group of researchers studying wide-range aspects of the current pandemic, to share their insights on their NSF-funded research and answer questions from our community. The next seminar will be on Wednesday, April 14th at 2:30 p.m. Eastern, featuring research highlighting talks and Q&A with presenters from seven different universities. Info and zoom registration here.

Become a NIH DATA Scholar
The NIH Office of Data Science Strategy (ODSS) Data and Technology Advancement (DATA) National Service Scholar Program is seeking experienced data and computer scientists and engineers to tackle challenging biomedical data problems with the potential for substantial public health impact. Applicants should have skills in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, data engineering, data science, database management, software design, bioinformatics or other relevant experience. Applications are due by April 9th - learn more and apply here.

From Outsider to Insider
The National Consortium for Data Science is hosting its annual career networking event "From Outsider to Insider" virtually on April 20th. This event connects employers directly with top-tier job candidates across different colleges, programs, and degree levels looking for a career in data science and analytics fields. The NCDS team encourages companies interested in filling open positions with the next generation of data science talent to register to host a booth at the event. Early registrants will receive a resume book. Register here.
