Over the past eight months, the building & grounds committee and the vestry have worked to plan a much-needed restoration project for the nave at Chapel of the Cross. In fact, the last time a restoration project of this scale was completed on the nave was over 40 years ago! The scope of this project includes repainting all of the walls, cleaning and restoring our beautiful wood ceiling, cleaning and touching-up the stained glass windows, and preparing the space for our new organ. Beyond giving the nave a spruce-up, several of the planned items will have the added benefit of enhancing the acoustics of the space, making sure that we get the most out of the new organ once it arrives.

This is an ideal time to undertake this project for several reasons. Many of the nave’s finishes are reaching the end of their useful life and without a near-term revitalization project, the required work could expand to include deferred maintenance items that could be avoided. Furthermore, the planned work will create dust and debris that could be harmful to the new organ, once installed. Completing the work in advance of the new organ’s installation makes the most sense to make sure the investment lasts as long as possible. Finally, with the pandemic preventing large-scale gatherings indoors, undertaking this project in the coming months will be minimally disruptive to the parish once full indoor services begin again.
Needless to say, this project will involve a long timeline and a big mess, but the first phase of work has already begun. If you have peeked through the front door in the last two weeks, you will have noticed some changes underway. Crews have been working protect the floor and pews over the past two weeks, and scaffolding is being erected throughout the space to allow crews to access the walls and ceiling. The scaffolding should be fully in-place by April 11, with plaster repairs, ceiling repair, and painting to follow. Barring any significant delays, the project will be completed in mid-June.
We are thrilled to undertake this project and are very excited to have a restored place to gather and worship together as soon as we are able. In the meantime, we will continue to keep you up to speed on the progress.

Reasons for Hope: Creation Care, Climate Change & Climate Justice| April 11
Caring for God’s creation is an essential component of our calling as Christians. Join us for three weeks in Eastertide as our Creation Care Committee brings in speakers to help us face the hard realities of climate change while giving us hopeful avenues to address the problem. We begin the series with William Barber III, the strategic partnerships manager at The Climate Reality Project, who will help us understand how climate justice, racial justice, and social and economic justice are all interrelated, and how we can make a difference with the actions we take. In preparation for this series, please read the April edition of the Creation Care Newsletter here.
Register in advance for any of the three meetings here.
