A Lucky Escape, planetarium shows, yoga and more!
Hello! As health restrictions continue to lift, we're in preparation mode to bring you lots of exciting programs and exhibitions that are sure to give you a cultural reboot! Saturday, June 12 will be a fun-filled day with the opening of the new exhibition A Lucky Escape: The Wild World of William Goodman. We'll also be offering Planetarium shows, a free sculpture-making activity, and it's the first day of our new, expanded hours!
We hope to see you on the 12th and in the coming weeks and months as we continue to ease back into our programming, including a few new opportunities. We have much to be thankful for, including your commitment to supporting the Museum during the pandemic, and we're very excited to be welcoming you back.

A Lucky Escape:
The Wild World of William Goodman
Second Saturday, June 12, 2021
Opening Reception with the artist, 11am - 2pm
Family Activity, 10am - 1pm
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the beloved RMAC painting Oddy Knocky by artist William Goodman. Throughout his career, William has focused on a love of making things, whether towering steel sculptures, musical devices, toys, drawings, prints or paintings. His versatility of medium and form also extends to a wide-ranging exploration of concepts from formal abstraction to imagined landscapes and fantastically-inhabited worlds.
On Saturday, June 12, visit with William and celebrate the opening of A Lucky Escape. Stop by the courtyard to make your own abstract sculpture inspired by the exhibition. All are welcome and museum admission is free for members and Roswell residents. Light refreshments will be available.

Second Saturdays
Family activities and free admission
Beginning on June 12, RMAC will be offering family activities from 10am to 1pm during Second Saturdays. All are welcome and admission is free for members and Roswell residents each Second Saturday. During the summer months, kits will be available to create while at the Museum or to take home. Summer Second Saturday family activities are supported by the New Mexico Humanities Council and the RMAC Foundation.
June 12, 10am to 1pm: In honor of the opening of A Lucky Escape: The Wild World of William Goodman, make your own abstract sculpture in the courtyard. Visit with the artist from 11am to 2pm. Light refreshments provided.
July 10, 10am to 1pm: Make animal masks inspired by the portrayal of animals in Indigenous American cultures in honor of the new exhibition Conversations: Artworks in Dialogue | The Daniel E. Prall Collection on loan from the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian. Staff and animals from the Spring River Zoo will be in attendance to teach about unique animal characteristics.
August 14, 10am to 1pm: Our friends from Explora Science Center in Albuquerque will present a variety of fun STEM activities.

Planetarium Reopens
With new showtimes
After more than a year of closure due to the pandemic, the Robert H. Goddard Planetarium re-opens on Saturday June 12! Showtimes on opening day are 11am, 1pm, 3pm and 5pm. The regular schedule will be Tuesdays through Saturdays with shows at 1pm, 3pm and 5pm daily, and a bonus 7pm show on Fridays. The planetarium will be closed Sundays and Mondays presently.

Gentle yoga moves slowly and mindfully, allowing you to move safely into a variety of standing, seated, and supine poses, calming the mind and body. Join 200-hour certified yoga instructor Alice Buck for this all-levels gentle yoga class in the Museum's galleries.

Jacob's Ladder
New addition to the Museum's outdoor art collection
On April 2, Las Cruces sculptor Rachel Stevens installed an outdoor sculpture with the assistance of City staff that she donated to the Museum. Titled Jacob’s Ladder, the work depicts a series of stacked chair and ladder forms that reach skyward, serving as a whimsical interplay between the earth and sky. Summer Internships
Supporting aspiring museum professionals
Do you know any college students looking to pursue a museum career? RMAC is offering two summer internships, with living stipends, for individuals who are presently in or recently graduated from a Bachelor or Graduate program in museum studies or a related field. Interns will receive mentorship from full-time staff while gaining hands-on experience working on collections, exhibitions and education projects.
The internship program is part of an ongoing commitment to make RMAC a more accessible and inclusive institution, by meaningfully expanding opportunities for aspiring museum professionals. Students representing ethnically underrepresented groups in the museum field are encouraged to apply. Click here for more information.

Virtual Field Trips
Connecting to exhibitions from the classroom
Starting in March every year, school buses pull alongside the Museum, bustling with school children. Students hop out with equal parts excitement for a day free from the classroom and anticipation for what they will see in the galleries and planetarium. Once inside, staff and volunteers give an orientation to ensure students are on their best behavior before they joyfully march off in small groups following after their guide. It's a fun time for the museum and something we look forward to hosting every spring.
But this year, of course, things were quite different. With COVID-restrictions in place and schools struggling to adapt to protocols, field trips were not an option for most schools. However, we recently hosted classes from Sydney Gutierrez Middle School and Artesia Middle School for virtual field trips via Zoom. Curator Aubrey Hobart presented several galleries and answered questions from students throughout the visits. We'll continue to welcome in-person and virtual visits throughout the summer and fall. Let us know if you are interested in arranging a visit for a class or homeschool program.

In Memoriam
The loss of a champion of the arts

The Museum staff, Board of Trustees, and RMAC Foundation are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Brinkman Randle. Throughout his life, he actively supported the arts in Roswell. At RMAC he was a volunteer and served on the Board of Trustees and the RMAC Foundation for many years. He was also a talented chef, catering dinners, receptions and special events - always going above and beyond to ensure everyone had the perfect experience. As a child, he took classes at the Museum, often talking of the courtyard and a tall oak tree in the middle of the Museum that provided an opportunity for peace and reflection as he pursued creative endeavors. It was those early connections and exposure to art that inspired his life-long interests. Above all, he was a dear friend to so many in our community and around the world, whether visiting or local artists or art appreciators. (So much so that he was the subject of artists on more than one occasion, such as the painting above by Larrybob Phillips.) Roswell lost a champion. Our condolences are extended to his many friends and family.

Expanded Hours
Beginning June 12!
Beginning Saturday, June 12, Roswell Museum and Art Center will be open seven days a week, 10am-6pm daily. The extension of hours allows visitors to now enjoy the Museum an extra hour every evening and on the weekends. Be sure your membership is up-to-date and visit soon and often!
