Comets News - 1 Apr

And that’s a wrap on Summer baseball for 2020-21!

What a weekend our Comets had with five out of our six Grand Finalist teams winning their respective premiership trophy

Congratulations to all teams on making it through the season and into Grand Final.
We’ve had some crazy weather conditions to deal with but we got to play baseball and this weekend couldn’t have been a more perfect day!
Our 2020-21 Premiers are Concord Comets RHBL Junior Div1, Concord St Pats RHBL Junior Div3 Gold, Concord Rosebank RHBL Junior Div2, Concord St Pats RHBL Senior Div3 and Concord Comets PCBL A grade.
Concord Comets PCBL E grade were 2020-21 Runners Up but, as their photo indicates, that certainly didn’t dampen their spirits!

Once again a huge thank you to our amazing ground crew as well as to all the umpires who managed our games this weekend and throughout the season - we have an amazing roster of umpires with our Junior Blues being mentored as they come up through the ranks and doing a great job every week for our teams.

Overall it was another great season for the club, well done to all teams, their coaches, and their parents, carers and supporters. Regardless of whether they made finals, all teams seemed to have enjoyed themselves from our U7s through to our Bigs and our adult PCBL teams. Again thanks to our wonderful committee for their work in helping us navigate through what was a difficult season with Covid and the extra wet weather.

And with that, we look forward to Presentation Day on April 24th and hope to see all our players returning next season!

Don't forget to watch out on the website for pre-season activities leading up to next Summer.

In the meantime registration is open for Winter Baseball, the Tamworth Tournament and don't forget the Colts program for our older juniors wanting to play winter baseball - just go to the links on our website to register or see the following information for more detail - LETS GO COMETS

Little League Junior D3 St Pats Gold team win Grand Final!

Let’s start the review of the game at 6-4 bottom of the fifth, as it had been neck and neck up until now. Rangers had some strong fielding and batting skills matched by the seasoned Concord St Pats team that consisted of one returning player and the rest baseball Rookies..

With ten minutes to go, SPC took to the field in the last innings of the game. This would be the deciding innings of the game, where St Pat’s would either be winners, or we would go down trying. With the clock running down faster and faster, we had to bat, and bat well. The coach was happy for the team to score only three to four runs, but the team had other ideas. With an upset mind set, the team batted their best ever in this final innings. Chris Costa was able to snatch a walk and be our first player on base. Zachary Ferris hit to get on base getting Chris to third base. Alex Di Cristo soon hit too and allowed for Chris to get home bringing the game to one run difference. Zac would soon steal home to level out the game. Alex would soon be joining the ‘stealing home’ club to notch up another run. Sam got to a full count and got walked so he joined the runners on the diamond. Thomas Nethery stepped up and with full count, took a hit with the ball, our first hit-walk of the game. Anthony  Naim, with smart batting got walked, and sadly Dominic Short was struck out in the batter’s box. With loaded bases Aiden Elias hit a huge double base hit to get everyone else home. With five runners home this inning, SPC was on 9 and Rangers on 6.

Sam took to the pitcher plate with only five pitches left to throw. His first pitch was a strike and his second a hit, this hit was fielded with  skill and lightning fast - reflexes by Sam. The crowd roars and SPC spirits lift even further, with Sam having the biggest smile in the world. Sam would finish off the next batter, but this batter would hit to get on base. With no one else on the field who had any pitching time in the season, Christopher Costa was given the game ball and given the role of final pitcher. With all the hopes and pressure on Christopher, the team got around him, giving him all the positive support and encouragement he needed. Chris’s warm up pitches just made the plate, what we wanted from our pitcher. Rangers saw this and thought, what an easy win this would be, but Chris had other plans.

It was at this moment before throwing his first pitch in the final, Chris grew eight feet tall and a Giant’s confidence. Throwing one ball and one strike Rangers hit, undeterred, Costa pitched two strikes back-to-back on the next batter only for this batter to get fielded out at first. Two out, one to go, score is 9-8 to SPC. It was with the next batter, Chris had his ultimate tango, Throwing strike, foul, ball, foul, foul, ball and then a hit. This ball was hit to Sam Avvenevole at short stop, under pressure, Sam fumbled twice but picked up the ball and threw to a fully extended Zac. With less than a few millimetres in it, the umpire called the runner out, ending a Rangers resurgence and a comeback win. With the whole SPC team going crazy and running over to Zac at first base, lots of emotions came from everyone on the team. There was a party on first with all of the team celebrating the out and the subsequent win. From all odds SPC had won 9-8 in the final minutes of the game. The crowd from SPC had erupted in celebration, the First Nine coach Dino Vaccher, and an ecstatic Mrs Warsop were overcome with joy and celebration from this nail-bitting decider.

A team only has one game that is the most important one all year, and this is the final, you can just win every other game the whole season, but the only game this ever counts the most is the Grand Final. After losing once to this strong Rangers side, the team played all season with the aim of winning against Rangers and win they did. The team showed so much heart and trust in each other, it was not eleven players in the team, it was eleven players, playing as one, positive and supportive, and this showed in the final innings of the season.

2. Winter Baseball – Juniors (Colts Grade)

For all of you Juniors players looking to play baseball over winter but not quite ready for full adult competition, the Pacific Coast Baseball League is exploring the introduction of a “Colts Grade” aimed at Junior players in the upcoming winter season.

The Colts Grade is a concept designed to assist into the transition of junior league players into senior league (adult) games. Several measures unique to this grade are all intended to facilitate the mental and physical shift of junior players into a senior baseball. The age brackets for the Colts concept is from 15 to 17 years of age. Exemptions may be accommodated for players up to 18 years of age or players aged 14.

Key objectives are:
1) Develop further knowledge of the game in both skill and game;
2) Foster player performance responsibility – owning up to the upward learning curve;
3) Manage player individuality, motivate players to develop skills and follow Coaches directions.
Team grading criteria will accommodate the following:
4) Accommodate junior players into the same Colts as a unique grade;
5) Play with participation of senior experienced players who undertake both a mentoring and tutoring role;
6) The Colts will be coached by an accredited Level 1 Coach, experienced with senior teams, preferable gained at high grade senior team;

This is a fantastic opportunity for players in the JD, SD and Bigs age groups to play some baseball over Winter and commence a transition to adult Baseball. Get some of your mates together and form a team.  The competition is likely to run for around 15 Rounds and registration fees for players TBC but expected to be similar to the attached registration fees for U18s, ie around $150 for current registered players or $255 for unregistered players.

At this stage there is no need to register however forward your expression of interest either as a individual player or as a team back to Tony by email:  solanoan@tpg.com.au or if you need more information you can contact Tony on  0402892280.
