Earth Day Outdoor Activity

Help us fight one of Indiana’s most common and invasive weeds during this year’s Earth Day weekend. Garlic Mustard is known for taking over areas very quickly, limiting our native biodiversity. Eliminating this aggressive plant around Notre Dame’s lakes will allow room for native wildflowers to flourish and become more established.
Gardening/work gloves will be provided. We ask that you wear long sleeves and long pants to avoid exposure to poison ivy. Please bring a reusable bottle of water and a mask. This is a great opportunity for you to enjoy the natural beauty of the campus, and all students, staff, and faculty are welcome.
We'll start off with a little "how-to" and point you in the right direction.

Paul Kempf is the Assistant Vice President for the Utilities and Maintenance Departments. He is responsible for the operation of the campus’s combined heat and power plant, distribution of all centrally produced utilities as well as the maintenance of over 11 million gross square feet of campus facilities. Paul is a 1980 graduate of Notre Dame and has worked for his alma mater for over 29 years. As part of the University's comprehensive sustainability strategy, he serves on the Sustainability Strategy Standing Committee, the Energy & Emissions, and Water small working groups.
A Shred-it truck will be parked in the parking lot of the Mason Services Center, which is located off of St. Joseph Drive behind the Notre Dame Federal Credit Union. The truck accepts paper only, so please be sure to remove all binders before dropping off your documents for shredding (staples are acceptable). For the courtesy of others, we ask everyone to limit their shred materials to no more than five file-size boxes so that everyone has a chance to go through the line. We also ask that you stay until your documents are on the shred truck as Notre Dame cannot be responsible for papers left unattended. As in years past, you can also leave your empty cardboard boxes behind for recycling.
