Hello everyone!

Hope you all are doing well. At long last the braintrust behind such innovation in the craft beer industry as Lime-a-Ritas and Michelob Ultra bring us the penultimate installment in their prestigious catalog; Chelada. An artisanal cuvee of light lager and Clamato "juice", Chelada brings you the absolute best of both flavor realms into one package. No doubt the result of some serendipitous 'Aha!' moment akin to the creation of the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup ("Hey you got your clam on my tomato!' 'You got your tomato on my clam!'") These little babies are extremely limited and selling out fast! You can preorder yours here.

April Fools' joking aside, this week is business as usual here at The Beer Junction. As announced in last week's newsletter, we have expanded our Bar Hours until 10pm Tuesday-Sunday (closed Monday) with last call for pours being half an hour before closing time. The retail section of the store, however, will still close at 8pm so arrive a bit early if you'd like to shop and join us for a pint. Our owner Allison received her 1st dose of the vaccine yesterday (hooray!) and is feeling just fine. Hopefully anyone out reading this who hasn't yet had the opportunity can do so soon.

Finally, one last reminder to everyone that we have closed down our Webstore indefinitely due to declined usage. As online sales dwindled over the past few months, it became financially unviable for us to maintain. So we are closing it down, in it's current iteration at least, until further notice.

Cheers!

Weekly Beer History + Fun Facts

Lightstruck

A common occurrence among the green and cleared bottled import lagers; beer with off-aromas is often colloquially said to be "skunked". Those who have encountered a skunk-like flavor in their beer rarely know just how close they are to the truth. Certain compounds in hops are light sensitive and when exposed to strong light a photo-oxidation reaction takes place, creating the compound MBT (3-methyl-2-butene-1-thiol). MBT is one of the more powerful flavor substances known to man. Commonly referred to as "skunky" the pungent odor compound resembles that of the famously malodorous defense spray deployed by skunks. Without getting too deep into the weeds of organic chemistry, humans are exceptionally sensitive to the lightstruck compound. MBT has a threshold of perceptibility around 4 parts-per-trillion in beer, or roughly the equivalent 1 drop in 5 Olympic-sized swimming pools!

Since about the 1960’s it’s been well established that the blue part of the visible light spectrum (~350-500nm) is the most efficient at generating lightstruck flavor. Brown glass bottles block light that is below about 500nm, while green glass bottles begin to block light below about 400nm and clear glass blocks no visible light. So visible light between 400 and 500nm poses a problem for beer in green bottles, and brown bottles are roughly 4 times as protected at these wavelengths. Unprotected and in strong sunlight, however, the reaction can be almost instantaneous; with tasting panels able to detect the aromatic effects of an exposure to less than 10 seconds of full sunshine. Under less intense conditions, for example a display cabinet with fluorescent lighting, these reactions still occur, though they may take a number of days or weeks to become noticeable.

Prost!
