Making Space for Women in STEM

Given that March is Women's History Month, it's the perfect time to shine a spotlight on Teammates for Women Empowerment (TWE), an organization founded within Virgin Orbit that's working to create a more equitable and inclusive environment in the space community.

Established and led entirely by Virgin Orbit teammates, TWE was originally formed in 2018. The group has made great strides since then, developing relationships with local schools and organizations like the Girl Scouts and the Boys and Girls Club, and offering students the opportunity to take factory tours, learn about potential career paths, and connect 1-on-1 with mentors on the Virgin Orbit team.

TWE has also served as an invaluable resource for Virgin Orbit teammates to connect with each other, practice leadership skills, and pursue professional development, while also driving positive change within our broader company. We're very fortunate to have a group of teammates so passionate about forging a better future for all those who love space!

TWE members pose for a group shot during Women’s History Month 2021.
Learn more about TWE in our Q&A with Jacqueline Sotraidis Schell, an awesome propulsion engineer who also doubles as TWE's Community Outreach Coordinator.

In Our Orbit

Over the past several weeks, we've seen unconscionable brutality in crimes committed against the Asian-American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community, including a tragic mass shooting in Atlanta, Georgia. Acts like these are difficult to even comprehend, and they call out for response from all of us to join together in solidarity against racism, hatred and violence.

For those looking for ways to help make a difference, we wanted to highlight two organizations that may be a good starting point:

Pacific Asian Counseling Services (PACS): PACS is a Los Angeles-based non-profit dedicated to healing people with mental illness through counseling and caring. The agency serves people of all ethnicities but is especially proud of their expertise with refugee and immigrant Asian Pacific Islander populations. → pacsla.com

Stop AAPI Hate: In addition to running a reporting center that tracks incidents of anti-Asian discrimination, Stop AAPI Hate also offers multilingual resources for impacted community members, and supports community-based safety measures and restorative justice efforts. → stopaapihate.org

Virgin Orbit donated to both of these organizations this month, and we urge you to consider checking them out too.

Please stay safe, everyone — and let’s all do our part to ensure there is a just, secure, and comfortable space for everyone in this world.
