In the late summer of 1959, accompanied by a Polish friend, a non-Jew, I travelled by car to the River Bug near Malkinia junction, on the Warsaw – Leningrad railway. We had intended, my friend and I, both of us students, to cross the river by the road bridge marked on my pre-war map. But on reaching the river, we found that the bridge was gone: destroyed in the fighting of fifteen years before, when the Red Army had driven the Wehrmacht from eastern Poland.
It was late afternoon. From the river bank, my friend called to a peasant on the far side, who was loading wood into a small barge-like boat. Eventually, the peasant rowed over to our side of the river, and took us back with him. Continue Reading

Samuel Pisar's Memoir

In 2000, Martin and I attended the Remembering for the Future Conference in Oxford, organised by the late Elisabeth Maxwell. Martin gave an opening address; Samuel Pisar's talk followed. Pisar, an international lawyer in Paris, spoke about the deportation of the Jews in France. Three years later Vallentine Mitchell published the first volume of my Holocaust Memoir Digest which has excerpts from published Holocaust survivor memoirs. Samuel Pisar's own memoir Of Blood and Hope is included in it.
Pisar's memoir was published in 1979 when he was 50. (He died in 2015, aged 86.) He was born in Bialystok, then part of Poland, but as it had been part of Czarist Russia, the region came under Soviet occupation following the Ribbontrop-Molotov Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact of August 1939. Based on a piece by Sir Martin published in the Spectator on 17 March 2007 “Churchill was too fond of the Jews, It's a nonsense to allege that the war leader was anti-Semitic” the following was republished with more clarifications by Finest Hour Volume 135, Summer 2007 edition:
In a press release announcing a book by Richard Toye on Churchill and Lloyd George, Cambridge University Press put its main emphasis on the discovery of a previously unknown article written by Winston Churchill in 1937, containing considerable anti-Semitic imagery.
The 1937 article, “How the Jews Can Combat Persecution,” was “unearthed by Dr. Richard Toye, a Cambridge University historian,” according to The Independent. “Written three years before Churchill became Prime Minister, the article has apparently lain unnoticed in the Churchill Archives at Cambridge since the early months of the Second World War.
