Hi. Here's the news.
Happy April Fools Day! Have no fear—we’re going facts only this April 1. In this newsletter, get the latest on men's golf and softball—both have local games you can catch coming up. Plus, how UA researchers are working to solve the sewage problem in Alabama's Black Belt and where to pick up some one-of-a-kind Alabama fan gear.

Today the University will host a vigil for victims of anti-Asian hate crimes. “This event is significant because it is the first event on campus to address anti-Asian hate crime,” one student said.

A pair of creative media students are calling out disproportionate education funding in a new student film. The movie’s story about high school students bonding over basketball has a lot to do with how people invest in their own communities—even right here in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama softball lost its first conference series of the season on Monday. The team fell to No. 7 Kentucky in a close third game that went to extra innings. Alabama will get a chance to turn the momentum around in Tuscaloosa today, when Texas A&M travels to Rhoads Stadium.

UA students can now purchase kente cloth stoles at the SUPe Store. The stoles were previously sold through the Black Faculty and Student Association (BFSA), which will continue to receive some proceeds from SUPe Store sales. “When graduating students went to the SUPe Store, we wanted to make sure that they saw some heritage, agency and identity,” the president of BFSA said.

Looking for some new fan gear? Alabama Vintage, owned and operated by a recent UA alum, may have just the vintage duds you need to add a touch of old-school style to your game-day looks.

Some at the University are channeling their energies toward improving quality of life for Alabamians. A team of professors from four universities recently secured a grant that will fund the research and development of a project meant to create wastewater treatment systems in Black Belt communities.

For fans of bad (and we mean really bad) reality television, the culture desk has a suggestion. Netflix’s “Marriage or Mortgage” takes the premises of two popular reality genres—wedding planning and house hunting—and merges them into an indecipherable mess.

There’s a new (associate) dean in town. The Honors College named Cassander Smith, a UA professor with more than 10 years of experience, to its new associate dean of academic affairs position.

Alabama men’s golf slogged through its weekend tournament to place 11th on Sunday. As the team settles into its season, younger players are starting to show major improvements.

Last month’s Tide Talks claimed RuPaul as an inspirational figure. “I really think that is good for the community to see, especially for people who aren’t comfortable with themselves or are trying to find out who they are no matter what their orientation is,” one student said.
Here are the off-campus goings-on:
  • Alabama’s Habitual Felony Offender Act increases prison sentences for repeat offenders and has been criticized as part of the state’s prison overcrowding problem. State legislators are considering repealing it.
  • University of South Carolina women’s basketball will be the only Southeastern Conference team to advance to a Final Four this year. The team is a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
  • The trial of Derek Chauvin, the police officer who killed George Floyd, continues. The New York Times continues to collect key moments from each day in court.

If more places applied the same level of care and foresight to their architecture and landscape as the University does, the world would be a prettier place. I don’t mean to say that everything should look like our campus or center around Greek revival-style architecture, but that greater standards and an overarching vision should be pursued in architecture as a whole. So what is lacking in much of today’s architecture? I think the answer lies between two points: over-reliance on the subjective and a lack of vision.
