Who is like You, O God, among the celestials; Who is like You, majestic in holiness,
Awesome in splendor, working wonders!
                                                                                                                Exodus 15:11

This Shabbat will mark our final day of the Passover Festival, which makes our Saturday morning service a very special one indeed. The Torah portion for the last day of Passover features the Shirat HaYam, the song of the sea. This calls to mind Miriam and the women dancing in celebration, with all of the people of Israel creating a cascade of grateful lyrics that remind us of the miracle, of freedom and of awe in the Divine.

It is always an incredible honour to chant the song of the sea. We do this twice each year: once when the Torah portion, Beshalach, comes around (usually in January), and during the Passover Festival. However the verse from this song cited above is sung in every service we do! That is how central and important the message of Passover is to us as a people.

This time of Passover we also begin to count the Omer, the 49 days leading up to Shavuot, our Festival which marks the gift of Torah. Music will be gloriously featured during the next month and I am pleased to announce two very special opportunities to comfort and inspire us all.

On Sunday, April 11th at 2PM our congregation has joined the 2nd Annual YOM HA'ATMAUT Across North America Concert Celebration. We are grateful to the Weisz family for their generosity in sponsorship, allowing us all to tune in ONLINE to this celebration of Israel.

On Saturday, April 24th at 8PM our congregation is part of a Cantorial Concert Event ONLINE on the theme: Hope, Healing & Love. You'll learn more about this event soon!

May your soul sing songs of freedom this spring.

GIVE TZEDAKAH
EULOGY FOR DR. HARRY HOTZ
Rabbi Emeritus Bernard Baskin

Dr. Harry Hotz has left us—and we are bereaved. For more than sixty years he provided care and exhibited affection for our children. He was always calm and quick to offer reassurance to troubled parents.

Some cynic said, “A specialist is a doctor who has trained his patients to become ill only during office hours.” In this sense Harry Hotz was not a specialist. He saw and treated patients at all times of the day—and often at night. He was always prepared to respond to the fervent call—ever caring and compassionate.

Over many years of medical treatment he grew to know and understand his patients as a friend, concerned adviser and often as a confidant. He put to work Dr. William Osler’s advice, “It is more important to know what sort of patient has a disease, then what disease the patient has”. Harry made sure he knew his patients. An old Jewish proverb has it that, “A new doctor sees you with one eye, the family doctor with two eyes”. Harry’s both eyes were always open where his patients were concerned.

In addition to his medical practice, he found time to serve as president of the Anshe Sholom congregation. A folk tradition has it that a good doctor walks with an angel at his side. In Harry’s case, that is the angel that he found as part of his spiritual awareness and religious sensibility. His contribution to the great community is commemorated at St. Joseph’s Hospital where the Paediatric wing was dedicated in his name.

My mother-in-law, may she rest in peace was a woman of firm opinions. She once had an animated discussion with Harry about how to treat one of my three children—all who were of course his patients. She said, “Doctor, when you have a family of your own you will understand what I’m talking about.” Actually, at the time Harry had three children. But perhaps, seeking even more practical education, he discussed the question with Ruth and they added three more offspring to their family.

Ruth was always a loving wife and indispensable helpmate over the years, and blessed with the same longevity, she shared in his long career of service and achievements. Indeed all members of his extended family have been unremittingly affectionate and supportive.

The great Louis Pasteur confided, “When I approach a child he inspires in me two sentiments—what tenderness he has now, and respect for what he might become.” I think that these words incarnate the essence of Harry’s work and idealism. Harry enjoyed the privilege of watching so many of his young patients grow into successful adults. As much as he healed them, he encouraged them and cheered them on until they graduated from his practice. But each of them, when asked, will tell you that they have always remained in some sense, a patient of Dr. Hotz.
