Achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is a global challenge, becoming acute in the face of climate change, natural resource degradation, and diseases affecting humans, animals and plants. Technologies and practices that promote sustainable intensification on smallholder farms vary spatially according to the diverse ways in which economic transformation and population dynamics are influencing the costs of land, farm labor, and cash inputs such as fertilizers and improved seeds. At this seminar we will reflect on how to achieve sustainable productivity gains through investments in soil health and knowledge.

Conservation, Food & Health Foundation: Support for Programs in Developing World

Incorporated in 1985, the Conservation, Food and Health Foundation seeks to promote the conservation of natural resources, improve the production and distribution of food, and improve health in the developing world. The foundation helps build capacity within developing countries in its three areas of interest with grants that support research or projects that solve specific problems.

The foundation supports projects that demonstrate strong local leadership, promote professional development in the conservation, agricultural, and health sciences; develop the capacity of local organizations; and address a particular problem in the field. It prefers to support projects addressing under-funded issues and geographic areas.

Conservation grants help improve ecological and environmental conditions in the developing world. The foundation supports field research and related research activities, training, and technical assistance efforts that help conserve viable ecosystems and protect biological diversity in developing countries train local leaders in conservation and protection of resources, with an emphasis on technical and scientific training

Food grants support focused efforts to improve access to food for consumption in developing countries. Areas of interest include projects that promote or develop specific sustainable agriculture practices with potential to advance science and practice in other countries; explore and refine innovative education and training interventions for small scale food producers and farmers; and advance new approaches to control pests and diseases affecting important food crops of developing countries

The foundation supports public health programs that are preventive rather than curative in nature. It supports research, technical assistance, and training projects that improve public health through community-based efforts that address health promotion, disease prevention, family planning, and reproductive health, increase the understanding and treatment of tropical diseases.

DoS: Integrating Democracy, Human Rights, and Good Governance in Efforts to Address Climate Change and Protect the Environment in the East Asia and Pacific Region

The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DRL) announces an open competition for organizations interested in submitting applications for regional projects in the East Asia and Pacific region to strengthen transparent and accountable governance that respects human rights and addresses inequality as an integral part of addressing climate change and protecting the environment for all.

Members of marginalized and underserved communities are disproportionately adversely impacted by climate change and face further disadvantages when responses seeking to address climate change reproduce or exacerbate existing inequalities and social injustices. The East Asia and Pacific region has also been one of the deadliest regions for environmental defenders in recent years according to reports. As political will and momentum for addressing climate change and preserving the environment for all increases, the need arises to ensure that efforts also address high rates of violence and systemic governance, human rights, and inequality issues.

DRL seeks regional projects that clearly articulate the linkages between civil and political human rights and good governance with climate and the environment, and should be designed to achieve the following outcomes:
  • Addressing violence and systemic governance, human rights, and inequality issues are fully integrated as part of a holistic approach when addressing climate change and environmental issues by governments, the private sector, and other relevant stakeholders;
  • Whole-of-society approaches that bring together governments with, inter alia, members of marginalized and underserved communities, civil society, independent media, and the private sector are utilized, increase transparency and accountability, foster increased collaboration and joint-efforts, and mitigate threats of violence;
  • Members of marginalized and underserved communities, civil society, and independent media more effectively advocate for, report on, and inform government, private sector, or other stakeholder efforts free from violence; and
  • Transboundary and/or regional cooperation is increased to address transboundary issues.

NIH: Hubs of Interdisciplinary Research and Training in Global Environmental and Occupational Health (GEOHealth) – Research Training

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits applications for research training activities in linked Hubs of Interdisciplinary Research and Training in Global Environmental and Occupational Health (GEOHealth). The overall objective of the GEOHealth program is to support the development of institutions in the Low- or Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) that will serve as regional hubs for collaborative research, data management, research training, curricula and outreach material development, and policy support around high priority local, national, and regional environmental and occupational health threats. These hubs are expected to conduct the research and training needed to identify and design mitigation strategies for the adverse consequences of environmental exposures and inform relevant policy development in LMICs.

The global network of hubs will serve as a platform for coordinated research and research training. GEOHealth Hubs are expected to provide leadership in environmental and occupational health research and in training a new generation of environmental and occupational health experts. Hubs are supported by two coordinated linked awards to 1) a LMIC institution for research and 2) a U.S. institution for research training. Both applications must demonstrate a commitment to extensive coordination between these two awards to meet goals of the GEOHealth program. This research training FOA is intended to support research training of LMIC investigators, provide mentored research training opportunities in the partner LMIC, and strengthen the capacity of the partner LMIC institution to conduct environmental and occupational health research.

Applicants are encouraged to explore the potential for future partnerships that include additional investment in the GEOHealth Hub, particularly with national governments of Upper-Middle Income and High-Income Countries, international donors, and other organizations in order to leverage local institutional capacities and to increase prospects for sustainability of the Hub. The GEOHealth Hubs are expected to provide leadership in environmental and occupational health research and in training a new generation of environmental and occupational health experts.

DoS: Promoting Gender Equality in India Through Music

U.S. policy strongly supports gender equality. In India, gender inequality is prevalent throughout the country and is a multifaceted issue that concerns both women and men. When India's population is examined as a whole, women are at a disadvantage. Gender inequality and its social causes negatively impact women's health, educational attainment, and economic conditions over their lifetimes.

This project will increase awareness and promote the importance of gender equality through male and female established musicians who are cultural influencers coming together to participate in a four-week music residency and performance program in India in late 2021 or early 2022.  These musicians -- USG alumni who participated in exchange programs administered by PAS India and non-alumni -- will promote respect for gender equality, cultural diversity, and different views through both composing original musical pieces on the theme of gender equality and conducting performances for a target audience of urban Indian youth from Tier I and II cities, with the goal of helping build resilient communities.

The grantee should plan for the possibilities of both in-person and virtual music residency and performances due to the COVID-19 situation.  Two budget submissions, one for in-person engagement and one for a virtual/hybrid model, may be submitted with the application.

Project Goals:

  1. Strengthen the capacity of USG alumni and non-USG alumni in the areas of leadership, team building and community service through development and implementation of music to promote gender equality;
  2. Strengthen the Mission’s relationship with the USG alumni network and youth of urban India through supporting gender equality; and
  3. Strengthen people-to-people ties between the United States and India.
Award Size: $60,000 up to $90,000
Deadline: May 28, 2021

DoS: Kyrgyzstan PAS Educational Programs

Projects awarded under the Public Diplomacy Grants program will build societal resilience and thus strengthen democracy and stability in the Kyrgyz Republic.
