WEBINAR SERIES: YOPD COUNCIL

The Third Thursday of Every Month 3 pm EDT

Because of the unique challenges of living with YOPD, we want to increase awareness of YOPD, provide resources, and share stories to help people with YOPD live better today.

One way we’ve decided to do that is to create a YOPD Council. This council has been convened so members can share their experiences of living with YOPD. Join us each month for this ongoing webinar series.

Can creativity help people with Parkinson’s disease (PD)? Could the swipe of a paintbrush, the refrain of a song, or the steps of a dance routine actually help someone who is living with a chronic, neurological disorder?  The very broad and simplified answer is, yes.

Of course there are medications to help manage the many symptoms of PD, and thankfully so, as they can make a tremendous difference in the quality of life for people living with PD. But many want to find additional ways to improve their day-to-day life, to mitigate symptoms, to possibly keep some symptoms at bay for longer.

Not only can creative pursuits help you physically, but they can also help mentally, emotionally and socially. And most are safe for people of all abilities to try. Below are some APDA resources to help you learn more:

Music-based therapies: Dancing, singing and other types of movement set to music can help exercise the body and lift the spirits. Learn more about music-based therapies in this installment of A Closer Look where Dr. Gilbert discusses how music therapy utilizes rhythm, movement, voice and creativity to try to improve PD symptoms, or check out some of the programs below:

  • Sing Loud for PD: This free online singing class for people with PD and their care partners can help strengthen your voice, assist with voice control, volume and breathing techniques, and it’s also a lot of fun! Registration is required, but rest assured that no singing experience (or talent!) is needed for this fun online vocal class. Weekly classes are currently scheduled through May 12.
  • Expert discussion on the benefits of dance: In this edition of Dr. Gilbert Hosts, we talk with David Leventhal, founding teacher and program director of Dance for PD, an award-winning, research-backed global program. David explains the joys and benefits of dance, and how the program creatively addresses symptom-specific concerns related to balance, cognition, motor skill, depression and physical confidence.
  • PD Movement Lab Every Friday you can join Pamela Quinn, a trained dancer and person living with PD (and also a cast member ofAPDA’s Look Closer public service announcement!and learn tools that allow people with PD to rediscover mobility and greater physical freedom.
  • Dance for PD PRO If you’re looking for a challenge, Dance for PD PRO is a rigorous, all-standing dance class for those seeking a level of mastery, comprehension, and focus. The class integrates a blend modern, ballet, jazz, improvisation and more.
Art-based programsEven if you’ve never picked up a paintbrush before, you can still give art-based therapies a try. Learn more about how and why art can help people with PD in this blog post from Dr. Gilbert.
  • Connecting Through Art: APDA launched this signature program in 2019 to foster the incorporation of art into the lives of people living with PD and encourage socialization through a series of creative activities. Connecting Through Art is being offered virtually and coordinated by our local Chapters.  Please check our virtual events calendar for a program that you can join and evoke your inner Rembrandt.
In addition to any symptomatic benefits, many of these creative therapies can increase happiness, satisfaction, and camaraderie. If you try a creative activity that you enjoy and find beneficial as a person living with PD, we’d love to hear about it at apda@apdaparkinson.org

In addition to the programs mentioned above, APDA has a wealth of virtual events coming up, especially with Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month just a few days away. Here’s a great one for you to check out:

Remember, APDA is here for you every step of the way. Please do not hesitate to reach out via our APDA helpline at (800-223-2732)  or email us at apda@apdaparkinson.org.
