Pastor Bob's Weekly Blog
“Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here. He has risen.” Luke 24: 5
Easter is again upon us and once again we heard the story of the empty tomb, of Mary’s encounter with the risen Christ in the garden. This Sunday we will share the story of the bewilderment of the disciples as they beheld his nail-pierced hands and feet. We know this story, yet we gather in celebration and new hope to hear it again and again. Maybe in its retelling we garner some new insight or understanding. Maybe we return to it for tradition or nostalgia. Mostly, though, I believe we return to it again and again because it is so hard to believe. Christ has died, but he is raised. Death is overcome. And all of this for you and me. As the writer Annie Dillard reminds us, we should not get too at ease with the unique and singular power of God revealed in the resurrection,
“Does anyone have the foggiest idea what sort of power we blithely invoke? Or, as I suspect, does no one believe a word of it? . . . . . It is madness to wear ladies’ straw hats and velvet hats to church; we should all be wearing crash helmets. Ushers should issue life preservers and signal flares; they should lash us to our pews.” “Teaching a Stone to Talk”, 1982.
A grace so powerful that death in undone? A divine love so passionate that it enters into death to save us from it? A mercy so deep it shakes the foundations of the earth? Hard to believe, yet the core of our faith.
Thankfully, faith does not require of us our complete understanding, as if that were even possible. Instead, we simply believe and cry, Alleluia!
Happy Easter!
