April 2021

Monument Family,

Greetings! April has arrived and I’m looking forward to the beauty of spring, how about you? Dana and I were able to visit our son Jacob and daughter-in-law Bethany in Los Angeles last weekend—I’m not a big fan of the traffic, but the palm trees, diversity, the food-truck bagel breakfast sandwich, flowers, mountains, and beach were a sight to see—and during our drive down the Coastal Pacific Highway I said, “Whenever I see the ocean I feel small.” I think the same thing is true when looking at the starry heavens on a cloudless night or when we fix our gaze upon the grandeur, mystery, and utter holiness of our God. The things that are troubling me tend to get much smaller when I keep my eyes on Him instead of my circumstances because I know that He cares, He is near, and He is working out His sovereign purposes and plans in my life and the nations for His glory! I’d like to highlight several things happening this month.
  • Easter Weekend – This month we remember Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection. Our Good Friday service will be on April 2nd at 7:22 p.m. (sunset). We’ll have a special Easter Sunday brunch on April 4th at 9:15 a.m. followed by our Easter worship service at 10:45 a.m. Please prayerfully consider inviting a friend, neighbor, or family member who doesn’t have a church home to attend with you.

  • New Sermon Series – We will be kicking off a new sermon series after Easter entitled “Emotional Rescue.” During this three-week miniseries, we’ll open God’s Word to consider what He has to say about our feelings of doubt, fear, and depression. Please join me in praying that this series will instruct, encourage, equip, and transform us.

  • Youth Ministry Meeting – Over the last several months, we’ve been prayerfully and diligently seeking the Lord’s direction and provision of leadership for our student ministry. We’re going to have lunch and a special meeting for all Jr. High and High School students and their parents (younger siblings welcome) after church on Sunday, April 18th  to give an update on the search process for a youth pastor and talk about upcoming plans. Students in 7th-12th grade and their parents, please plan to attend!

  • Sanctuary Transition – A few weeks ago we announced the elder’s decision to transition back to the sanctuary for worship on Sunday, May 2, 2021 (barring no major changes to the health risk/threat of the global pandemic in our community). I’m so excited to make this transition and will be sharing more information about the in the days ahead. We’ll continue to have an area in our building where the service will be live-streamed for those who need/desire to worship in a masked environment.
It’s a joy to begin another month of ministry together! I know God is doing a great work in and through us as a church. Let’s “keep our eyes fixed on Jesus” (Hebrews 12:3) and “keep seeking and thinking about things above” (Colossians 3:1-3) as we strive to develop dedicated followers of Jesus Christ who worship, grow, love, and share all for the glory of God! I love you – Serve Him well!

In Christ,
Pastor Jeff

Dave and Crystal Hughes

Dave and Crystal Hughes, McCade (17) and Teagan (13) serve CVNext, a new branch of Campus Ventures.  Crystal is the daughter of Lee and Loretta Muhr (the faithful custodian of our building) and the sister of Cassie Clement.  After serving Campus Ventures for over 20 years, the Hughes are starting this new branch which is focused on helping graduates as they leave Campus Ventures and enter the work world.

Spearfish, South Dakota, is where the Hughes live.  They are a very busy family.  Dave received his masters in October.   He has been meeting with staff, seniors in college and graduates to help cast the vision and mission of CVNext.  Crystal signs for their church.  She also focuses on the kids and their friends and meeting with gals.  McCade will graduate this spring and will be attending South Dakota School of Mines next fall.  He has done some welding sculptures.  Teagan is in seventh grade.  She sings in an ensemble, paints, and does photography.  The Hughes recently celebrated their twenty-second anniversary.

Dave says, “As I started contacting former students, it was obvious that many were not doing well in their faith walk.  There are many factors for this, but the reality was they needed encouragement to press on. . .

These graduates who were discipled in college have great potential to advance the kingdom and to be a vital part of the Church. . . One of my biggest roles currently is to help them connect with those of like heart and to keep active in their pursuit of God. . .”

Some prayer requests from the Hughes family are for Dave’s dad who has been in the hospital and rehab for ten weeks.  Pray for Dave and his sister as they get his affairs in order, encourage him to keep doing rehab so he can go home, and  may be assured of his standing with the Lord.  Dave and Crystal also need wisdom as they help graduates transition well and help them get plugged into a like hearted community after college.

A written note of encouragement can be mailed to the Hughes family at 1645 North 3rd Street, Spearfish, SD 57783  or an e-mail can be sent to dave.hughes@campusventures.org.    Thanks for praying for Dave, Crystal, McCade, and Teagan.
