An Organ Concert for the Easter Season
Good Friday, April 2, 2021
Dr. James Welch

Join us on Good Friday, April 2nd, for an organ recital of music for the Easter season at the Oak Hills stake center, 925 East North Temple Drive, Provo, at 7:30 p.m. This recital will only be in-person.

James Welch, new to the Oak Hills 5th Ward, will perform on the Schantz pipe organ. He will be joined by soprano Barbara Cramer and pianist Aliza Cavender. Their hour-long program will feature music written for Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter. Attendees are kindly asked to wear masks and observe social distancing standards.

James Welch studied at BYU, received his doctorate in music from Stanford University, and has taught organ at UC Santa Barbara and Santa Clara University.  He and his wife Deanne have recently moved to Provo and have a mission call to the BYU Jerusalem Center, where he will play daily recitals on the organ and she will direct the choir.

Memo to UVAGO from James Welch
Dear Friends of Utah Valley AGO,

Thank you for the warm welcome that I’ve already received from you. My wife Deanne and I moved from Palo Alto, California, to Provo at the beginning of March. We loved Palo Alto, but Provo is already home to us in many ways, since we have so much family here (and I love to ski!). I studied at BYU with Parley Belnap, so I’ve come full circle, it would seem.

Our mission call to the BYU Jerusalem Center was supposed to start last August, but it has been postponed due to Covid. We hope things will open up enough that we will be able to leave for Jerusalem sometime this summer or fall.

I look forward to being a part of UVAGO and getting to know you better in the time we have before leaving.

I have taught at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and more recently at Santa Clara University. I enjoy teaching organists of all levels, and I am available for lessons or coaching (for instance, if you want help on a specific piece or topic). You can give me a call at 650 400-3278, or e-mail me at welchjames@gmail.com.

I also have a large library of organ music. If you’re looking for something, I might just have it, and I’m happy to share.

Thanks again for welcoming me to the chapter.

Sincerely,

Jim Welch
