What's Up, Hornets?

This week, Sac State AAPI community members sat down to talk about the spread of violence against Asian people. Students and faculty from the women's and gender studies department reflect on the last 50 years at Sac State, and Sac State's Police Chief Mark Iwasa announced his retirement during spring break. Plus, the Faculty Senate approved changes to general education requirements. 

Sac State AAPI community members respond to nationwide anti-Asian attacks

“If you are surprised by the anti-Asian violence in Atlanta, Georgia, that happened two weeks ago, you haven’t been listening to us,” said Seunghee Wie, a Sac State professor.

On Tuesday, members of the Sac State AAPI community sat down and shared their experiences, new and old, in response to the recurring violence against Asian communities. This event comes in response to the mass shooting in Atlanta on March 16, where eight people were shot and killed, including six Asian women. The increase in hate crimes targeting Asian American and Pacific Islanders also provoked concern during the discussion.

Women's and gender studies students and faculty reflect on department's 50th anniversary

Sac State's very own women's and gender studies department celebrated its 50th anniversary in March. Students and faculty sat down to talk about the department, how far it has come since its inception in 1971, and where they hope to go in the future.

Sac State Police Chief Mark Iwasa announces retirement
Sacramento State Police Chief Mark Iwasa has announced he will retire from Sac State in the summer. Iwasa has worked at Sac State for 10 years. Photo courtesy of Sacramento State.

After 10 years of service, Sac State Police Chief Mark Iwasa announced his retirement via a SacSend email sent by Jonathan Bowman, Sac State's CFO and vice president for administration.

According to Bowman, Iwasa's departure will occur in the summer, but the search for his replacement has already begun.

Faculty Senate approves establishment of ethnic studies requirement at Sac State

Sac State's Faculty Senate voted to approve a new ethnic studies requirement in general education area F in order to comply with AB 1460. 

In order to maintain the number of units to graduate, general education area D units will be lowered by three for students graduating in 2024-2025.
