Hello, and welcome to the news and tools delivery from EDJNet.

The US administration is launching a recovery plan of unprecedented economic firepower. To the contrary, evidence shows that EU efforts at recovery remain timid, with Europe unlikely to be among the primary beneficiaries of any general upswing in the world economy. Alternatives Economiques digs into the topic.

The pandemic's impact is particularly harsh on young people, who experience a loss of job security and a deterioration of mental well-being, as revealed by a recent report by Eurofound that was reused by Voxeurop.

Economic recovery plans: Europe is falling behind the US, again

Aude Martin from Alternatives Economiques shows that the United States are spending more money and more rapidly to support their economy than the Europeans are doing. And while Biden's plan may result in higher imports, it is not the eurozone that will benefit the most from it.

  • The OECD reckons that growth in the US will be 6.5% in 2021, compared to only 3.9% in the eurozone.
  • Biden's 1.9 trillion dollars stimulus package approved by Congress in early March includes aid packages for families, the extension of unemployment insurance benefits, financial support to states, and stimulus cheques for households.
  • Millions of Americans have already received the cheques, whereas the EU member states have not used a single cent from the 750 billion euros promised by the Next Generation EU plan.

Tools and Tips

Tutorial: finding stories in European datasets

In this tutorial, we join with our partner LocalFocus to provide practical tips and tricks to find relevant (regional) data on a European scale, particularly through the Stats Monitor tool that they developed for EDJNet. The tutorial is in English.

The Stats Monitor is meant to make it easier for journalists to find stories in data on a European level, from COVID-19 to economic and environmental stats. The host, Yordi Dam, highlights the available sources and explain the main features and functionalities of the tool.
