INTERN OF THE WEEK: MATT WINDELER

Sam & Matt & Sami & Mary!

I live in … Ottawa ON.

When not working on “Rockin’ the Suburbs” stuff … I work as a physicist, specifically photonics (specializing in optical parametric chirped pulse amplification).

My favorite episodes are … new music, album anniversaries, artist deep dives, EPJ.

My favorite artists are … Dan Mangan, R.E.M., Sam Roberts Band, Matt Mays, The Tragically Hip, Taylor Swift.

My record collection consists of … 200+ CDs, 13 records (just started collecting in the past year or so).

The most prized record in my collection is … one of five signed colour discs with a demo of Dan Mangan’s Lay Low.

The first record I ever bought was Stadium Arcadium by the Red Hot Chili Peppers on CD, More Or Less by Dan Mangan on vinyl.

The last record I bought was … Folklore by Taylor Swift.

The first concert I saw was … Moneen, Anti-Flag, Rise Against and Billy Talent at the Civic Centre in Ottawa on Feb. 3, 2007 (went because of a girlfriend at the time, although I do still enjoy Billy Talent once in a blue moon).

The best concert I saw was … Patrick Park and Dan Mangan at the Hotel Utah Saloon in San Francisco on Mar. 27, 2019. It was a tiny room, the roof was leaking terribly, Dan was fighting through losing his voice, but it was the first time I got to see him do an intimate show.

My favorite hockey team is … Columbus Blue Jackets.

My favorite “football” team is … Minnesota Vikings.

My philosophy of life is … If you’re not laughing, you’re crying.

THE HOME INSPECTION REPORT

PLAYLIST OF THE WEEK >>>

Our David Bowie countdown set a record for most songs to receive votes, so we knew right away what we had to do: round up every single song that got a vote and wrestle them onto one playlist

So here it is, 93 songs, from "Absolute Beginners" to "Ziggy Stardust," with all the lovely music in between. Soak it in peoples.

What We're Listening To:

Jim:  Keleketla!, Coldcut - Keleketla!
Mary:  Fitz & The Tantrums - Head Up High
Matt:  The Fratellis - Half Drunk Under a Full Moon
Patrick:  Willie Dunn - Creation Never Sleeps, Creation Never Dies
Sam: Rick James - Street Songs
Sami: Demi Lovato - Dancing with the Devil... The Art of Starting Over

Friday New Releases: What Are You Buying Next?

Flock of Dimes – Head of Roses (Sub Pop)
This is the second solo album by Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak (who records under the name Flock of Dimes when on her own). Fans of Wasner know what to expect: Music that feels heavy but sounds beautiful.

The Fratellis – Half Drunk Under a Full Moon (Cooking Vinyl)
Scotland’s anthemic indie band showcases its ‘60s pop influences on its latest album. Pour yourself an old fashioned and slip this on the hi-fi in your sunken living room.

Demi Lovato – Dancing With the Devil … The Art of Starting Over (Island)
Lovato describes this as the unofficial soundtrack to her upcoming documentary, which addresses drug addiction and sexual assault. But the pop sound belies the seriousness of such subject matter. It’s upbeat music for a survivor who sees brighter days ahead. One of our interns says it sounds like a California spring.

Ratboys – Happy Birthday, Ratboy (Topshelf)
This Chicago indie band is celebrating its 10th anniversary with new recordings of some of its earliest tunes. It may be their birthday, but we receive the gift.
