We’re inviting you to take part in our Spring membership campaign, which kicks off today. Since the Maynard Institute launched in 1977, we’ve made it our mission to promote diversity, belonging and antiracist newsroom practices. 

2020 was a whirlwind of a year for all of us, the Maynard Institute included. Between the light shed on the poor treatment of journalists of color and the sudden increase in demand from legacy news organizations for our guidance, we’ve been tested in ways we’ve never been tested before. Thankfully, our amazing community rallied around us with support.

The theme of our Spring membership campaign is rebuilding, and we’re asking for your help. Membership campaigns are one of the key ways we raise funds to support our efforts to create antiracist newsrooms and institutions of belonging. 



Here are a few examples of reporting that our members helped fund in 2020:

• We discussed how to create institutions of belonging with with Nikole Hannah-Jones
• We covered community focused solutions to AAPI hate crimes with reporting from Oakland Voices
• We organized a fantastic program for the 2021 Maynard 200 cohort who are 44 mid-career journalists of color from across the country (the first session begins next week!)
